we probably won't lose - many, many things are more likely - but it's not true to say we can't lose...Prufrock wrote:Eh? How'd you work that one out? Possibly if we needed to win the match. No-way Chef, with a 1-0 lead, sticks them back in without being sure we can't lose IMO.BWFC_Insane wrote:Aye, I'd say a SA win is probably slightly more likely than an England one now. Although both incredibly unlikely.Bruce Rioja wrote:How long's left to play today? Three hours? And we need to take four wickets and have a T-20 style knock in that time to be able to have a full day at them tomorrow? That bit of me that's telling me it can be done is in remission, I'm afraid.

attacking declaration there!
a first innings lead of 2 for us and a tricky 20-odd minutes at the end of the day...

Fair play to them for going for it, but I don't think I've ever seen a declaration by a side that's still behind before.thebish wrote:attacking declaration there!

they're not really going for it - not seriously, but they do want to make us sweat a little and take some of that into the next test, I imagine...Bruce Rioja wrote:Fair play to them for going for it, but I don't think I've ever seen a declaration by a side that's still behind before.thebish wrote:attacking declaration there!

What do you think will happen now? Slog like mad 'til lunch then put them in?thebish wrote:they're not really going for it - not seriously, but they do want to make us sweat a little and take some of that into the next test, I imagine...Bruce Rioja wrote:Fair play to them for going for it, but I don't think I've ever seen a declaration by a side that's still behind before.thebish wrote:attacking declaration there!

nahh... I think cook and hales will play fairly patiently and seek to gain some valuable openers time at the crease... we'll not be trying to win this. ideally they will look to bat out the entire day together.Bruce Rioja wrote:What do you think will happen now? No way that we will want to bowl again, after spending all that time in the field. Bat the day out is the aim I suspect.

We can't leave an attainable total to be got so will bat till it's beyond reaching. Might just give the S.A's an hour for devilment..

87-4 at lunch. A lot of dig-in needed now. To let it slip would be a total disaster.

127-6 and tea approaching. Iffy but I think we have the draw.

Would it not be the gentlemanly thing to do, to declare now and give them a fair crack at winning/us bowling them all out?

What is there - about three hours play left? Looking at the run rate I guess we're playing everything with a dead bat.TANGODANCER wrote:127-6 and tea approaching. Iffy but I think we have the draw.

Re: Cricket - proteas
Currently 155-6 at tea so probably 2.5, 3 hours at best. I doubt any chances will be taken and can't see us putting them in. Could easily be wrong.Bruce Rioja wrote:What is there - about three hours play left? It appears that they're off for light, so that should see the draw home.

Fckg hell Harry. You scare me at times !!
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: Cricket - proteas
It used to happen more than you think in rain affected County matches where a draw is no use to either side. Captains will sometimes agree a total in a set amount of overs for the last couple of sessions...If only one side has batted they have been known to agree something like side A scored 260 all out when the rain hit..on final day clears up with 40 overs still playable, so they go for....side a "gives" side b 60 in 10 overs by bowling buffet...side b declares on 60 after 10 overs and side a declares second innings on 0-0. Leaves 30 overs to chase 200 @ 6 and a bit an over...Bruce Rioja wrote:Fair play to them for going for it, but I don't think I've ever seen a declaration by a side that's still behind before.thebish wrote:attacking declaration there!

Eight dropped catches in Capetown? Eight? Bloody hell. Has anyone seen them? Were they dollies or difficult?
