This week I went to La Tomatina festival in Bunol, about an hour from Valencia.

20,000 people covered in the stuff, it was knee deep where I was. Not something you do every day...!

Did you get to Valencia? I'm there next week.

Re: Summer Holidays
we've trips planned to Rocamadour,
Park on the official car parks right at the bottom, and you can take a dotto train up to the town. Otherwise you'll probably be too knackered to walk around it! Following your visit, as you drive up the hill opposite Rocamadour, there's a couple of little pull ins by the road where you can get some (the best views) photo's.

Does everything shut there on a sunday though? Normally in the SW everything does.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

Cheers anyway! Apparently, its all open 7 days a week. Shame really, I was hoping to do the walk up (though obviously not on my knees like suggested) but the GF has other ideas, and the noddy train it is.

Re: Summer Holidays
LK if you are driving through northern France check out Dinan in Brittanny. Spectacular mediaeval town once inhabited by Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Fantastic food market in the main square on a Saturday. Confectioners aplenty in the Port area (walk down the Rue de Jerzuel and back to work off the Ker-y-Pom)

Then if you have time head South to Rennes and the 'Machines de L'ile', a workshop/ museum where you see the most amazing anima-chines inspired by Jules Verne. You could even ride this big boy.

Its on the list for next time now, cheers Gary, but its a bit of a bridge too far for us as we're travelling south and merely passing through.

Also oop Northern France, nr to Le Havre, Honfleur is a must. Especially if you like seafood and art. Or art and old churches, or art and overpriced ice cream................
Whatever LK, have a great time. Hope you sing the anthem 'Eugenie' whilst in Castelnaudary...

Of course Honfleur's not been the same since we lost it to the French in 1450... Still good spot to get the real CalvadosIl Pirate wrote:Also oop Northern France, nr to Le Havre, Honfleur is a must. We didn't lose it, we simply allowed the French to look after it for a short while.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Too old to do it now, but one place I'd like to have seen is the Carcassone, Languedoc region and Montsegur. Fascinating history area of the Cathars.

Yeah Tango, all the men running around with swords and shit are long gone, don't worry.

You seen those hills? In ten days time I'll be 74 and whilst I like to imagine I'm a young gazelle, a whiskery old Wildebeest is the reality. Re: Summer Holidays
Was wondering that myself. My parents are discovering the joys of travel (along with its obligations and frustrations) in later life, Tango, and little pleases me more than the fact that they finally are. They're older than you, Buddy Boy. Please don't let anything, especially age, deny you your heart's desire, especially by way of travel. The world really is a much smaller place than it once was.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Why on earth would you think yourself too old?TANGODANCER wrote:Too old to do it now, but one place I'd like to have seen is the Carcassone, Languedoc region and Montsegur. I don't want to sound maudlin' or owt, but recent events have taught me that Bruce is spot on. If you want to do something Tango, & you have the means, get it done. It may not be possible tomorrow.....

clapton is god wrote:^ Skiathos is our favourite Greek island. Been there half a dozen times. You'll love it, but there really is little to do there.... Except eat, drink and catch the sun. One road along the south side of the island and a bus that trundles back and forth all day long. The north side of the island is well worth seeing but you need to hire a car, a 4x4 usually, and I would recommend Victoria for that. It'll cost about £150 for a week. In the new harbour of Skiathos town you'll find a catamaran that does day trips. Been out with them twice and always a cracking day! Where you staying?
Cheers, gents.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote: Aye. I'd agree with all that. Be warned that the bus can get pretty full at times. There is a cracking little tapas place in Victoria. Can't remember the name of it, but it is on the front to the right hand side of town if you have the sea to the back of you. Up a set of stairs, so great views.
Got back today. Managed to swing a free holiday with the rents. Basically, they, and lil bro, were going, and this placed charged by the room, so they had to pay for four anyway (nice trick). Worked out well for me!
Island was fab, nothing there (hence I spent a couple of evenings where we didn't go out on here, and one rainy afternoon) but when the weather was good it was ace. As Clappers says, eat, drink, and catch the sun. That bus is fab, ended up going to Skiathos Town a few times, and managed to find the QPR game on in a pub in Koukounaries. We booked a boat trip to the north, but choppy seas meant we the boat wasn't allowed to go

We stayed in Achladies. Hotel was ok, not great shakes, but was right next to the beach, and the sea was fantastic. Got a lot of reading done!
