I got my wife back home with her new titanium hip after two days in the hospital. It was a pretty amazing process. It took a while to see a rheumatologist in order to get a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. Once we saw the latter things speeded up and the system worked quite impressively. Now they send nurses and physical therapists to the house. It's all working out a lot better than I expected given what is generally said about our Medicare system.

Chris is still active and in charge of our rare books (formerly history of medicine librarian). I am emeritus, a fancy word for passé. The greatest railway journey I ever took was in August 1961 from Moscow to the Hook of Holland. Unfortunately they decided to build the Berlin Wall with us of the wrong side and stuck us in a siding while they worked matters out. I was therefore one of the first to get through the Wall from East to West when they let us go.

It was a school trip and we could have been in worse trouble. Because of a phony exchange rate we could sell our clothes for ten times their value on the black market. Therefore we did not cash any of our travelers cheques but lived on the proceeds of our illegal sales. It also meant our suitcases were full of vodka and Russian knick knacks, but very few clothes, when we came back. We were quite nervous at exit control at Brest-Litovsk, but were set free. After that we were left alone in our railway carriage for three days. When the guards found we had sneaked into the unused first class compartment to sleep on the seats and luggage racks, they kicked us out and locked it. Some classless society I thought. After three days we walked through the "wall" at the Berlin railway station - at this point it consisted of cunningly arranged sandbags piled high. I imagine later they tore up the tracks and built something more substantial.

The country’s Federal Administration Court, in Leipzig, backed the move to restrict diesel-car use after it was reported that 70 German cities have NOx levels which exceed EU limits.

While other countries - including the UK - are also considering restrictions on diesel cars, especially in built-up areas, a widespread block in the birthplace of the modern automobile is a new blow for the motor industry and Chancellor Angela Merkel's government, which had resolutely opposed the ban until now.

The ruling came after German states appealed against restrictions imposed by local courts in Stuttgart and Dusseldorf in cases brought by environmental group DUH over poor air quality that it said was the cause of 13,000 premature deaths each year.

So, lets get this right, Germany, more people, 13,000 premature deaths, UK figures quoted as 40,000 plus? and folk wonder why people think the tree huggers lie through their teeth or use 'make up' scare figures.
Still I suppose I should really 'get it' after all the problems with Waring tribes in Africa, the subsequent famines and such are all the fault of the British and Stalin should have a statue in Trafalgar square, not Nelson, who kicked the crap out of our trusted, loyal EU partners the French for no good reason.

Having read the reports (which I assume to be accurate) about him, his father and his five uncles' 'exploits' in the past, I'd agree that he and his family are pretty much the very definition of scumbags, and while not exactly agreeing that he deserved to die, I won't be mourning the fxcker either.

What concerns me more is that the innocent householder is now facing a murder charge, and even if ultimately he's not charged, he shouldn't have to go through the shxt he is facing just because an invading scumbag happened to get skewered on his own implement.
I also think that in his, the innocent householder's case, it should be in Justice's interest that his name should have been withheld so that (specifically) the scumbag uncles, scumbag aunties, and all the scumbag family of the perished one cannot vent their misplaced scumbag spleen against him, the innocent one.
