fab! great to hear that :D

when i went to open days there with Miss Bish - I was very impressed with the place... it's subjective, I guess - but it did feel like they genuinely put a lot of effort into creating a proper student community - a "family" they called it - it didn't feel as emotionally cold or distantly corporate as other Unis (like Teesside) we have encountered over the last 6yrs...

Incredible. That's exactly the feel I get when I'm there, and bear in mind, ultimately, I'm a middle-aged bloke with a corporate agenda. I've done quite a lot of work with Uni's over the years and have found none to have the feel that Bradford has. No pretence, no one-upmanship, just a lot of good, well-balanced individuals all round. Sheffield runs it second, I'd say, but yeah, if Missy Bish fancies Bradford for the way it feels (of course, she'll have other considerations) then I'd say go for it.

Make sure to ask for MoMA not MOMA or you might get a surprise.

I'm not really sure Wigan would be better for kids than a nice suburban township within an hour of Manhattan. Still, your call.

Or any electronics you've been thinking of buying. Significantly cheaper.

If you do want to do a lot of the touristy stuff, I'd recommend the New York Pass. I think you can get 1,3,5 & 7 day varieties. They basically get you access to a load of attractions (visiting Statue of Liberty, going up the Empire State/30 Rock, loads of museums etc) and que jumps at some of the places. Even if there's only a few things you end up doing it 'pays for itself' pretty quickly.

Think September will still be baseball season, even if you're not really into it as a sport I'd go just for the experience if you can get a ticket for a reasonable price.

This is v v good advice if you are doing NY culture... It may seem expensive at first, but not when you hit your 5th destination...

If it were me - well - the NY Met Opera - if I'd agonised about the price and somehow convinced myself... That would just be IT...

Eat here - you absolutely must. Even if it's just lunch. It's up by the Lincoln Centre / bottom of Central Park.

Apparently it's the only place in NY where Pavarotti would eat, and I imagine that that lad knew his way around a plate of food. ;)

Completely agree with you Monty, I just meant that their mum would never let me take them to live there. (Its bad enough me trying to take them on holiday to wales). My best mate lives in Chatham in New Jersey, it's only 20mins by train to Manhatten. Where he lives is such a wonderfully picturesque town, I'd quite happily bring my kids up there.

One of the times I went, my mate took me to eat at Jeckyll & Hydes, a cheesy yet brilliantly over the top, horror themed restaurant in Greenwich Village. Food was good but the atmosphere was tremendous.

Just looked and there's now one in Time Square.

Cheers chaps. While I'd love to do some of the touristy it'll be very much time limited as I'll be office-based 9-6. Got properly 3.5 days to get out and see stuff. Already down empire state/ellis island, so think MoMA is on the agenda :D

Be warned. I expected to be round MoMA in a half an hour, dismissing everything I passed as being complete and utter bollocks. Don't get me wrong, there's enough of that stuff in there so as to amuse, but ultimately I was in there for around 5 & 1/2 hours. Buggers had to kick me out in the end just so that they could close.

Also, when I was there, they were about to open a Robert Heinecken exhibition, which I was a week too early for. It's running March 15–September 7, I'm guessing that you're going to miss out too. Shitsticks. It looks superb.

my only real tip apart from the normal stuff is the restaurant La Esquina. Mexican restaurant in Soho. i was recommended it, loved it, told everyone else who's asked this question and they've all loved it too!

looks like a grubby taco diner from street level but the maitre d will whisk you down some back stairs through the kitchen Goodfellas stylee and into the coolest bar/restaurant ive ever been in!! its where i discovered you could enjoy real quality, smooth tequila and not just that rancid shit you do shots of down the local.

when we went i enjoyed just pottering about without any real agenda - we kind of batted off the touristy things quickly and early, then spent the rest of the time mooching, rode around on bikes, searching for classic film locations n'that, going in bars & delis or record shops round Greenwich and the east village. the high garden too... its pretty frickin ace.

ESB isnt that great, id always suggest going up the Rockerfeller instead as you get a similar elevation and the same panorama at the top, but you get the ESB in all your photos! also you can time it so you go up just before dusk so you get the views before and after dark - double bubble!

We did the Empire State at night and 30 Rock during the day. Just wish I'd known about that Mexican restaurant when I went!
