Re: Today I'm happy about......
On a lesser note, today I'm happy about having just been told I can have Monday off. Yes, yes, I know it's a bank holiday but we get given them as days in lieu. Ergo: Days off when no-one else is off. So, barring Christmas ans Easter bank holidays, this'll be the first time in eight years that on Sunday I won't be the one saying "Err, not for me thanks. I'm at work in the morning".

May the bridges I burn light your way
Re: Today I'm happy about......
as monday is my day off anyway - bank holidays simply pass me by un-noticed...

The Crystal Palace supporting 'uncles' (actually my daughter's cousins but they will be like uncles) are already circling and putting in bids. Congrats Will!
But I was down for the weekend with the (very joyously received) BWFC babywear. And daughter says 'That is just not going to happen'. He will be allowed to 'follow' a London team, apparently, and she approves of Palace over most others. But allowed only to 'support' one club for the rest of his life. 220 miles up the road!

Bish - about three pages too late, I know, but just thought I'd chip in.Bruce Rioja wrote:Incredible. That's exactly the feel I get when I'm there, and bear in mind, ultimately, I'm a middle-aged bloke with a corporate agenda. I've done quite a lot of work with Uni's over the years and have found none to have the feel that Bradford has. No pretence, no one-upmanship, just a lot of good, well-balanced individuals all round. Sheffield runs it second, I'd say, but yeah, if Missy Bish fancies Bradford for the way it feels (of course, she'll have other considerations) then I'd say go for it.thebish wrote:fab! great to hear thatBruce Rioja wrote: I'm currently doing some work with Bradford Uni. We're making polyester felt from old plastic pop bottles. Every time I go there it makes me feel like I missed out. Tremendous place.![]()
when i went to open days there with Miss Bish - I was very impressed with the place... it's subjective, I guess - but it did feel like they genuinely put a lot of effort into creating a proper student community - a "family" they called it - it didn't feel as emotionally cold or distantly corporate as other Unis (like Teesside) we have encountered over the last 6yrs...
I studied at Bradford and loved every minute of it. I had grades/offers for "better" places, but I definitely made the right choice. I'm sure it's changed a lot since I was there (92 to 95); indeed, where I lived in first year has been demolished! And the city centre has changed a lot.
Everything about my time there was good - the study and the people (as Bruce says above - the unpretentiousness was striking - I'd been at Canon Slade, and plenty there, particularly in sixth form, were right up their own backsides, so Bratfut was great after that). The curry was definitely a high point as well! Never thought I'd be so enthusiastic about the wrong side of the Pennines!
And just to add to what Bruce has said above - I then did a year's postgrad at Sheffield - that was really good as well.
I do hope your daughter is as happy at Bradford as I was.

Re: Today I'm happy about......
Proper regression last night. My friend works in London during the week and then goes back home at weekend (bit like your agreement, GM, I assume). His company are paying for him to stay in this absolutely lavish flat in Southwark, with expenses on top of that. So went round last night (first time we've had chacne to catch up since his move), he gets all the beers in on allowance, plus food, doesn't let me pay for anything. Then, we make some simple chicken pasta thing, then proceed to kick back, watch football and play pro evo 6 while sinking about 10 cans each. Having planned to get the last tube back home, ended up staying up til about 2am then crashing on his couch. Bloody sore head today but a dream walk to work.
Obviously not a regular thing, and to an extent it is a regression of sorts, but for one night, you can't beat shit like that.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
