As far as I understand it (coming with a massive disclaimer) patients can reject their doctor on the grounds of race (tutor in EU said so, I was astonished, as were others, but she insisted were true). I don't see how a male midwife is different. The women all said they wouldn't want a male midwife, but not would accept it was because they felt sexually threatened (thus implying a male midwife is some sort of deviant), they kept going on about a feeling they just couldn't articulate. They felt uncomfortable. They all went mental when I suggested it is the same sort of subjective, prejudicial 'feeling' that meant 50 years ago people might feel uncomfortable about having a black doctor. It's not the same 'superiority' complex, but it is still a subjective 'feeling'. Point I was making was look at it from the point of view of a male midwife who is denied a job because he is a man, and explain how that is different to stopping, say, for example, a woman taxi driver working better paid overtime shifts because she is more likely to be overpowered by thieves on the late night dodgy runs (something which was held to be illegal). It isn't a problem at the moment, because male midwives are now allowed, but people being given the option could lead to a situation where a perfectly competent medic is denied a job because of their sex. S'bollox.

Watched the Cameron speech referred to in that Dawkins article. A, to be honest excellent, speech had its effect completely ruined by some shithouse speechwriter who threw in a vomit worthy Kennedy reference and a robotic 'we are all in this together' repetition, both in the final minute. Bleurgh.

Point I'm making Pru is that by saying that you can't have a choice of a male or female midwife could actually be discriminatory against certain sections of the population.
Therefore, to force one or the other onto people would actually be "inequality" in action.
I agree about the fairness for the midwives, BUT equally denying patient choice could be discriminating against certain groups of the public...
Tricky issue. Not sure about being able to refuse a doctor based on race, but I guess there are similar arguments. However, it would have to be for genuine "cultural reasons" so a muslim lady seeing a female doctor only is probably fair enough, but I'm not sure seeing a Muslim doctor only would necessarily be a "reasonable" request with a justified reason.
Its a minefield it really is...
Those who deal with these sorts of HR issues at work will agree I'm sure...

It's a disgrace. You can't even hound someone out of a job for being pregnant these days without them running off to a tribunal. Political correctness gone mad I say.

Thats the spirit!
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

The piss poor establishment that claims to be the best post GCSE establishment in the country, better than Bolton School, better than Winstanley, better than any sixth form in the land, which has just sent our kid (who they fckud up on) a certificate with glowing commendation for.......turning up to all his lessons. Like a genuine 'put this on your CV' job. The half arsed statistic bending wonky arsed f*ckers who sum up everything wrong with education. Places stopping gifted kids doing proper subjects coz it might cock up their statistics, instead, getting 100% pass rates from gifted kids who've been forced to do NVQs in counting so they can claim to be ace. Shithouses.

Well given that the EDEXCEL Chief Exec recently pointed to the Content Free syllabus - which us old 'uns have known about for years. There has to be some way of differentiating the poor buggers.Prufrock wrote:The piss poor establishment that claims to be the best post GCSE establishment in the country, better than Bolton School, better than Winstanley, better than any sixth form in the land, which has just sent our kid (who they fckud up on) a certificate with glowing commendation for.......turning up to all his lessons. As everyone gets 15 A*'s nowadays, attendance might be a good way to differentiate. Personally, I wouldn't put it on my CV. There's probably kids out there with the same results and only half the attendance. I'd suggest they're the bright ones.

It's a massive set of piss. I think it is 24 years in a row the GCSE pass rate has risen. In a row. Sans exception. Now I'm proud of my results, and there are plenty of clever people done very well, but anybody who suggests exams haven't got easier is pissing in the wind. Teaching has, I think, got better too, though the recent exam board revelations are damaging and seriously twenty four in a row, but the self professed, lying, best college in the country giving a certificate to our kid, who they massively copped out and f*cked up on, for pissing turning up. Turning up! I despair.

Which college is this?
Sounds about as big of a con as university. A totally legitimate con, mind you.

If exams don't perform the basic function of differentiating attainment, then there isn't much point in them. That means you get the brightest ones with A's and A*'s - maybe 10% of the population and work through the ranks from there.Prufrock wrote:It's a massive set of piss. I don't have any idea on how the establishment kopped out on your kid, so can't really comment.
All I will say, is when I went back Uni as a "mature" (and I use the term advisedly) student. I was rightly concerned when I jacked in my job that there would be some really bright A level students in the same class as me, and given the 12 year gap since I'd previously been in education, I had a real nervousness that I'd be left behind. I needn't have got any grey hairs over it with hindsight.
I'm no Einstein in hiding, but the fact that I was able to hold a day time job down in my third year, three days a week, and knocked out my dissertation from start to finish in two days, probably tells you all you need to know. There were people on the course that had grade A, A-levels and struggled with the basics in the subject they were supposed to be good at.
Not going to go through the same dialogue we've had before on this topic, other than to say the educational system is letting all our kids down, not just your brother.

Ha, welcome to the "I've finished school by a few years and so can now see that today's kids get away with blue murder" club.Prufrock wrote:It's a massive set of piss. It's been ever thus.
The cream ARE the cream and opportunities to garner information have never been better. However, the ever onward march to ensure the middling group get over-rated and even the mud-dwellers are still given some 'achievements' are the change in the past 10-15 years.
The real changes however have come by the amount of continual assessment, marked internally by the very teachers who've done as much ... or as little ... as they have plus the fact that you can take, re-take and re-retake specific modules of your exams and effectively upgrade your results by stealth.
Fck, if they'd let me do that back in the day I may have even got a pass in Physics.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
