Royal pregnancy: Hoax call to Duchess of Cambridge hospital

Hoax callers from a radio station posing as the Queen and Prince Charles got information from the hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge.

King Edward VII hospital in London said a nurse had discussed her condition with the Australian radio station and that it "deeply regrets" the incident.

It said confidentiality was taken seriously and telephone protocols are under review.

A spokesman for William and Catherine said he would be making no comment.

Two presenters on Sydney-based radio station 2Day FM are reported to have convinced staff they were the Royals and were connected to the duchess's private nurse in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The pair were given an update on her condition.

A spokesman for the hospital said: "This call was transferred through to a ward and a short conversation was held with one of the nursing staff. King Edward VII's Hospital deeply regrets this incident."

John Lofthouse, chief executive at King Edward VII's Hospital, said: "This was a foolish prank call that we all deplore."

apparently this is how it went...

The hoax caller says at one point to the nurse: "When is a good time to come and visit her because I'm the Queen and I need a lift down there."

The callers were put through to the nurse after Greig, co-presenting the Summer 30 weeknight show, rang to ask to speak to her "granddaughter Kate". She was put through to a duty nurse who told Greig how the duchess was faring.

During the two-minute call, Greig said to the hospital switchboard operator: "Oh hello there, could I please speak to Kate please, my granddaughter," and was told: "Oh yes. Hold on," and was then put through to the duty nurse. The hoax Queen said: "Kate my darling, are you there?"

The nurse replied: "Good morning ma'am, this is a nurse speaking. How may I help you?"

The "Queen" said: "Hello. I'm just after my granddaughter Kate. I wanted to see how her little tummy bug is going."

The presenter was then given details about the duchess's condition, and the "Queen" replied: "OK. I'll just feed my little corgis then."

Pretend barking is then heard in the background, with a pretend Charles shouting 'Mummy mummy!"

The "Queen" then asks when was a good time to come and visit her "because I'm the Queen and I need a lift down there".At one point, co-presenter Christian, who was pretending to be Charles, asked: "Is Wills still there, or has he gone home. I haven't spoken to him yet." The "Queen" then said: "When are you going to walk those bloody corgis?" with "Charles" replying: "Mummy, I'll go and take the dogs outside."

There can't only be me that finds radio 'prank calls' to be unfunny to the point of embarrassment and extremely dated. Steve Penk was churning out this shite 25 years ago, and I very much doubt he led the field. For DJ read Wanker!

It's not the call that's funny. The accents are so bad that you almost cringe. It's the fact that two people seemingly got duped by it.

Duping innocent people going about their business is funny? OK, let's disagree ;)

I have a fairly simple test - did it make me laugh - this one did...

I would tend to agree, Bruce, about duping innocent people. However, I have to confess I did laugh some five years ago when two Montreal comedians, the Masked Avengers, telephoned Sarah Palin claiming to be President Sarkozy. The level of ignorance she displayed about the world outside Alaska was staggering and this was a person one heart beat away from the presidency had they won. Perhaps I felt public figures were fairer game than poor nurses. The transcript is on Wiki.

Sory to diversify from the royal child, but mention of Steve Penk brought back a funny memory. Wife and I were very close friends with a couple who loved in a sizeable house on Green Lane. My mate had paid a good few bob to have his driveway re-laid with some form of red shale/tarmac. Lovely job. About a week after it was finished one of his sons rang me and told me to tune in to Penk on a certain date. The wind up, arranged by the sons, involved Penk being an official from the gas board ringing their mum and informing her that a leak had been discovered in the area and they were going to have to dig the drive up. You can imagine her reaction.

To cut a long (and quite hysterical) story short, Penk finished off by saying they'd do their best to repair any damage but couldn't guarantee the quality. He then asked x if she could lay on a few bacon sarnies for the workmen. Never forget her parting tirade delivered in a very loud voice and ending: "AND DON'T CALL ME DARLING". repeated for weeks afterwards by everyone who met her. It really was very funny.

Rich Hall, one of my favourite comedians, does a piece on Sarah Palin on this between 3:00 and 5:00 (though I reckon you'll like all of it).

I do agree that any publicity seeking public figure is absolutely fair game, but I just can't help thinking about how bad that Ward Sister must feel just now, and pray that she isn't hung out to dry.

This is a fact and they ought not have, though it'd be good to remember that the nurse made an awful error which could well be career ending.

Clearly to have this gig she must be exceptionally capable but now ... at the hands of two nice people with nowt better to do .... may well find herself looking for work.

I do find that sad & far from funny.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

If I investigated the potential consequences of everything I'd ever laughed at, I'm sure I could find lots that could have repercussions elsewhere. I'm equally sure that investigated under the same microscope, the contents of the joke thread, just about every bugger that ever posted on it would probably fall foul of the humour police at some point.

There's two things here

1) Did it make me laugh when I heard it - yes - that's funny.
2) Are there potential repercussions from it - yes - that's not funny.

The two are different.
