Interesting to hear from someone who knew him!
The thing I don't get is that it's blindingly obvious that hatred, distrust of dislike of certain 'British' things doesn't mean you hate Britain.
British values (whatever the feck that is supposed to mean) include tolerance and liberalism. The Labour Party is a 'British Institution'. Does the Daily Mail hate Britain?

also from the daily mash...

ED Miliband has revealed that his father loved Britain but disliked David Miliband intensely.
Miliband said his father Ralph ‘never took’ to the family’s eldest son, regarding him as superficial and incapable of leading the Labour Party.
He added: “Dad always told me that I would be a much better leader than David no matter what anyone else said, or indeed, continues to say.
“When I was nine he sat me down and said to me ‘you, Ed, are the chosen one – David is what, in the future, will be known as a Blairite stooge’.
“He also said that I was much better looking.”

I went from ignored to disliked because of Michael Gove. I didn't even understand the question. Nor had I heard of the man until a couple of days ago on another thread.BWFC_Insane wrote:Hated. Re: The Politics Thread
Obamacare.... is this kind of car crash politics not inevitable when you pass major reform on the basis of electoral maths rather than wider consensus?
I've said it before - it blows my mind that Obama played over 100 rounds of golf in his first term (far more than me over that period!) and only one of them was with a Republican.
Does he think he and his agenda are on a higher plane than dealmaking, flattering, cajoling... you know - politics?

Re: The Politics Thread
The current owner of the Daily Mail has an estimated wealth of £1.02 billion but pays no tax in the UK although he seems that his newspaper is very concerned about all those who are taking too much from the “benefit system”... he's one of those non-doms...

^ Don't know if you saw Question Time last night, Bish, but Mehdi Hasan made fecking mincemeat out of Quentin Letts.
I can't turn the volume on at work, but I'm guessing that you'll find it on here.

It is on youtube - unfortunately Letts response was not included. Good rhetoric though. A little unfair to Rothmere who died in 1940.Bruce Rioja wrote:^ Don't know if you saw Question Time last night, Bish, but Mehdi Hasan made fecking mincemeat out of Quentin Letts.

He barely had one, although what he had claimed something along the lines of the Daily Mail having no particular political allegiance, which was quite astonishing.Montreal Wanderer wrote:unfortunately Letts response was not included.

Re: The Politics Thread
When I lived in England pretty much all the national daily papers were conservative, except the Manchester Guardian (Liberal) and the Daily Worker (Leftist in the extreme). Most appear to have moved to the centre except the Mail, possibly through some application of Newton's third law of motion, which seems to have gone to the right.Bruce Rioja wrote:He barely had one, although what he had claimed something along the lines of the Daily Mail having no particular political allegiance, which was quite astonishing.Montreal Wanderer wrote:unfortunately Letts response was not included.

Re: The Politics Thread
Compared to what they were in 1950s, but perhaps I am wrong. Is not the Mail extremely right wing? Has not the Times moved a little left? To me the centre accepts things like social programs and cultural diversity - but I'm getting this all pretty much second hand (so don't be too shocked - just consider it ignorance).Bruce Rioja wrote:WHAT????Montreal Wanderer wrote:Most appear to have moved to the centre except the Mail,

Re: The Politics Thread
not sure the sun, the mirror, the express, the star, the guardian or the telegraph have moved to the "centre" in any definite/meaningful sense... you might say the independent is in the centre - but that wasn't around when you were here and hasn't moved to the centre - it always was in the centre... the FT and the Times dallied with labour under blair - but have returned to form...Montreal Wanderer wrote:Compared to what they were in 1950s, but perhaps I am wrong. The serious papers were the Times, the Daily Telegraph and the Manchester Guardian - the first two were true blue conservative and the last liberal. They employed journalists with a high level of literacy!
Less serious but respectable were the Daily Express and the Daily Mail. Both conservative and they employed reporters who were somewhat literate.
Then there was the tabloid Daily Mirror which concentrated on sports and many pictures. It was also conservative. There was no Sun. The other tabloid was the Daily Worker, which was an organ of the Communist Party. The other leftist papers tended to be weekly.
In the 1950s conservatives (and conservative papers) took a harder line on a number of issues than it seems to me that they do today.
