Britain in a day - BBC2 9pm
On November 12, 2011, directors Ridley Scott and Morgan Matthews invited everyone in the UK to film part of their day and upload it to YouTube. The result was 11,526 clips capturing the entertaining, the mundane, the exciting, the unusual and the poignant, including breakfast with the family, life in a detention centre and an unexpected marriage proposal. Now those 750 hours of footage have been edited down into this feature-length documentary, offering an insight into the lives of people living in Britain today. The film forms part of the BBC's Cultural Olympiad.

Watched Ukraine v Sweden in a Boras bar full of Swedes. Somehow they'd immediately recognised that colleague and I were English and gave us no end of (friendly) shit when they went one up. Quiet when they left though, bless.

A heads-up that Mad Men is starting afresh from S1ep1 on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday evening this week. We've never watched any of this but have always had the sense that we've missed something special. Still worth the effort?

Re: What are you watching tonight?
After reading Patrick Swayze's autobiography, I had a sudden urge to watch Dirty Dancing again (well, I've only seen it 39 times, had to round it up).
Ground-breaking movie in its own way, signifying the end of an era and a breakthrough in youth music and dance attitude. Easy to relate to for me because, almost in one night, I was jerked out of a church-social environ and thrown head first into the world of rock and roll. Still a terrific sound track even today.

Watched a baseball/stranger in USA movie called Sugar. Black Spanish speaking kid from Dominican Republic is a great pitcher. Signed by Kansas City for their youth team. Will he make it in this strange country?

Finally got round to watching the rest of Snowtown. If you didn't know that it was factually based you'd point the 'far fetched' finger at it. Seriously powerful, often gruesome. However, having just read up on the actual cases - I conclude that the viewer's got off quite lightly.
Really disturbing stuff

Have got it on my sky planner, looks like a more cultural and less terrible 'Goal'?William the White wrote:Watched a baseball/stranger in USA movie called Sugar. Re: What are you watching tonight?
not seen Goal. But this is not terrible. and, yes, is an examination of the stranger in a strange land... But it is emotionally low key... And the intended upbeat ending doesn't work (imho).General Mannerheim wrote:Have got it on my sky planner, looks like a more cultural and less terrible 'Goal'?William the White wrote:Watched a baseball/stranger in USA movie called Sugar.
