Re: Where are you going tonight?
Not like that on a thursday eve... Sounds like it was busier Wed morn...General Mannerheim wrote:The Robert Peel makes me laugh, i parked outside it Wednesday morning at about 10am when i went for a haircut. Half a dozen winos stood at the door chonging on woodbines with plenty more inside! Actually it was quite worrying how busy it was at that time on a weekday!

Beer was decent, not very full, not very interesting, but didn't much care - was talking with friend and didn't have to worry about driving... Presumably the alkies are all half dead or banned at this time...
your reccos?

in Bury centre? blimey, Automatic probably (as previously mentioned) no farty ales, but all the usual draughts, bit more varied bottles & belting cocktails! Brambles might be alright on a thursday night? or if its ale you're after then the Trackside is the hotspot. My mate owns the Blind Tiger (below Bella Italia) i like it in there the best.
But really you wanna go to your mates local, The Lord Raglan. im sure he must have mentioned it to you living in nangreaves!? proper pub!
There isnt much in Totty or Greenmount but the Pack Horse at Affetside is pretty central to you both? as is the much talked about Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe!

Yep - we've done the Raglan... just I feel so resentful about him living one hundred yards away from a great pub... I have to travel - so should he...General Mannerheim wrote:in Bury centre? blimey, Automatic probably (as previously mentioned) no farty ales, but all the usual draughts, bit more varied bottles & belting cocktails! Off to watch my homeless Saints at Widnes for the first time. Looking forward to it - always a superb game against Warrington.

Best pub in Bury is the Trackside at the train station. Love it.Harry Genshaw wrote:Best boozer in Bury imo is the Two Tubs. My mate and co-writer has moved to Nangreaves and Bury is kinda good between us - especially since my partner will drive me there and us both home...
Can you recommend anything better? And places to eat in Bury? I ask because this is likely to be more than occasional - for business as well as just chat...![]()
Food wise the pub on the other side of the Robert Peel, Wyldes, does pretty good pub food although I'd recommend Automatic which is next door to/underneath the Met.
Automatic is DIRE

wood street socialist club.
It's the home-town commemoration of an old, old friend, fellow-Trotter and fellow Socialist who died in New Zealand on Boxing Day. And I'm sharing some memories.

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Don't know about that - but it's existed as a socialist (as opposed to Labour) club for over 100 years) and at one stage - when pubs had to close in the afternoon - was a famously seedy drinking den, and haunt of wrecks and prostitutes, because it stayed open all afternoon. By the door is a brass plaque with a clarion on it, a memento of the old days when the clarion cycling club used to cycle from Bolton to outlying towns and villages to spread the socialist message with open air meetings (before the first world war!). Put the plaque and clientele together and you got the club's nickname in the 1960s. The C*nt and Bugle Club.Bruce Rioja wrote:Isn't that where the Krays once got busted (or summat to that effect?)William the White wrote:wood street socialist club.

The Capitol. Formerly known as Varsity. And, IMO, it was better before it was refurbished...

I once got thrown down the stairs top to bottom there and all the way down I held on to the fella that threw me. About 1973 it was. Happy days!William the White wrote:wood street socialist club.

Re: Where are you going tonight?
Blimey. Lived in Bolton all my life and never heard the word "socialist" mentioned in association with "Wood Street Club". Together with The Griffin, the dodgiest spots in town. The Coppers never closed Wood Street because they always knew where to find all the villainsWilliam the White wrote:wood street socialist club.

Well, being socialists, they'd not be at work, would they
