Watched a bit of Seasick Steve at the Isle of White festival. Always figured him a bit of a novelty act previously but it was actually pretty good, and might turn some younger folk (like myself) onto delta style blues. He even had John Paul Jones on bass/mandolin! Will probably watch the rest tonight.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

It's the trailer for a demented Spanish movie called The Last Circus. It's brilliant. Could be called Killer Clowns from Espana with total accuracy.superjohnmcginlay wrote:I can't see youtube here. My copy of De Profundis includes also the Ballad of Reading Gaol, The Decay of Lying, The Critic as Artist and the Soul of Man Under Socialism. I've read the first two, possibly the fourth, but I don't think I've read The Decay of Lying or The Soul of Man Under Socialism. I'll try to find time to have a look.William the White wrote:De Profundis is beautiful. I saw a very moving reading of it by Corin Redgrave three years ago, just before he died.Prufrock wrote:If you loved 'Wilde', and were interested by his life, read De Profundis. A more honest, tortured, book of insecurity mixed with patches of genius you will never read. I love his other stuff so much, his way with language is incredible; but, as a human story De Profundis is amazing. Is basically a letter to Bosie from Reading Gaol about why he is there and what he has learnt about life, all framed in an essay about art and what is beautiful about life.
Wilde was also a powerful advocate of a kind of Utopian anarcho-socialism...
Have you read his The Soul of Man Under Socialism?

About to watch the pilot of ABC's new drama Last Resort. It looks very good so I'm hopeful.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Saw Killing Them Softly last night. Hmm a strange one, i thought it was enjoyable enough, the stylised violence was a bit OTT for me, exploding heads etc but then there was an amazing slo-mo scene of a guy getting shot to death that was pretty spectacular. The story is nothing new, familiar old gangster hitman type fayre, with plenty of familiar old gangster actors including half the cast of Sopranos! (one of which is surprisingly overweight) Ive read this morning that it’s based on a true story? this might explain a few utterly pointless sequences, like James Gandolfini's part? As good as it is to see him again, just being a drunk Tony Soprano (and he constantly complains about being typecast) just felt like he’d been written a role and shoehorned in. All in all decent enough, gratuitous, brutal, humorous but a bit frustrating. Wants to be Drive but isn’t even close.
Still to see better than Killer Joe this year.

I was looking forward to this, the trailer was pretty bad ass, but I've heard mixed reviews. Is it just a movie that wants to be cool? I get that sense with Tarantino flicks, and I've never really understood the hype around his stuff personally.General Mannerheim wrote:Saw Killing Them Softly last night. Ive another Docu-drama effort for your list, Werner Herzog's 'Into The Abyss' not as cinematic as the last few but its more compelling - not so much haunting, but sobering! i stuck it on late last night, just to see what it was about but couldnt turn it off.
May the bridges I burn light your way

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Went this afternoon and glad I did. A good story well told - but could have been a lot better, I thought. Brad Pitt plays his role really convincingly but as you say it looked as though Gandolfini was just a lecherous old hit man given a film role for past services to the genre. The Political stuff going on on every TV screen was a bit of a downer. Thought it was just to help anchor the film in a time slot for us but it continued on and on. Johnny Sachs must be the ex-Soprano you mention (above and beyond Gandolfini himself, that is). Good stuff in parts, atmospheric and well worth seeing but only 3/5 for meBeefheart wrote:I was looking forward to this, the trailer was pretty bad ass, but I've heard mixed reviews. Some good reviews on before the film too. Now waiting for End of Watch and I suppose Taken 2 as well. There was a third that looked good too about the US Iranian hostages.

Finally going to watch an orchestra tomorrow. Something I've wanted to do for ages. So since I work next to the Bridgewater Hall now, and there were student tickets going for 3 quid, I figured I'd go for it. The Halle orchestra playing Stravinsky (my main reason for wanting to go), Holst and another that I can't remember. Looking forward to it.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Superb venue. Been to a few concerts there and seen the Halle twice; once for a mixed classics night and the other a Spanish evening. Nothing stuffy there, the conductor wore a red waistcoat with a bull on it for the Spanish concert and the atmosphere was brilliant. None the less for them playing Ravel's Bolero of course.Beefheart wrote:Finally going to watch an orchestra tomorrow. Something I've wanted to do for ages. The Hallé do a Halloween gig.. As sad as it sounds, it's absolutely tremendous.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Got to say. It was pretty amazing. I was left thinking 'wow, Orchestra's, where have you been all my life?' Which puts them in an exclusive club with Gin & Tonic and Guacamole which have caused a similar response. Will definitely be going again soon I think.
