It's certainly very interesting - Not sure the Labour Party understands "how to depose a Labour leader" let alone one who's a sitting PM. Either way I think it's locking the stable door rather after the horse has left and I'm struggling to think of a credible successor.Verbal wrote:Purnell resigns from the cabinet, calls for Brown to go.
75 names back Brown to go apparently.

He'll do well to survive Friday. In fact, if he lasts past Monday I will be amazed.

So, Our Great Leader (tm) is going to propose electoral reform tomorrow...

My first is why the bloody hell would we want a wholly elected House of Lords? All we'll get is an enfeebled facsimile of the other shower. It's supposed to be a body that scrutineers legislation and proposes amendments (something that MPs seem to have absolved themselves from these days). We won't get that with a bunch of MP wannabees. I'd rather have a House of Experts - which is more akin to what we've got now. Trouble is Brown will dress up is proposals as 'power to the people'. It won't be.Verbal wrote:So, Our Great Leader (tm) is going to propose electoral reform tomorrow...

I'm inclined to agree with you here, if the house of lords is elected, all they'll be interested is keeping in power, not doing what's needed. I do think all peerages should be lifetime ones though, and not inherited.Little Green Man wrote:My first is why the bloody hell would we want a wholly elected House of Lords? I'm sure whether Shawn Wright Phillips would stand up to a career in Parliament...BWFC_Insane wrote:Aye but that would be offset by members from the SWP, greens etc!hoboh2o wrote:If you are prepared for BNP members that is.............................BWFC_Insane wrote:Proportional representation. But we'd have some idealistic crackpots mixed in with the unscrupulous. So it might just work.hoboh2o wrote:And we'd end up with a bigger bunch of crackpots ruleing than we have already got!!!BWFC_Insane wrote:Aye but that would be offset by members from the SWP, greens etc!hoboh2o wrote:If you are prepared for BNP members that is.............................BWFC_Insane wrote:Proportional representation. But all that is besides the point, PR is the only way forwards for a truly fair democratic process.

Depends at what level you set the qualifying threshold. You could set it to something barmy like in Israel, ie 1.5% in which case you have a plethora of crackpot minor parties exerting undue influence over the major parties. Or you could set it to around 8-10%.hoboh2o wrote:If you are prepared for BNP members that is.............................BWFC_Insane wrote:Proportional representation. The only fair way....

Of course there's nothing to stop the BNP gaining seats through the first-past-the-post system - it's just that the threshold is higher still.

The only way would be to get shut of the lot of them and let the wankers, sorry bankers, buisness leaders, and the Bransons, Sorroses etc along with the Harriet Haperpersons of this world continue to run the country but save us all money by removing the election Facade?
Then one day we could all revolt and start all over again.

So... how are we enjoying the Conservative Party Conference?
Thought George Osborne actually gave quite a risky speech today (i.e. quite a bit of content!), perhaps necessary though for the sake of credibility.
Ken Clarke's was a good speech, perhaps the best of the conference season so far?
Star of the show has to be Boris... his speech was typically idiosyncratic yesterday, and he's done a good job of dealing with the media attempt to invent a rift between him and Cameron. Here is his interview with Paxman that has earned him some acclaim:
