Where do you come from?
I have seen the following link before (which as just been posted again on ww) - however I don't recall it ever being posted on here before.
I have just tried the link with both my real surname and mother's maiden name - and both are almost entirely based in the Bolton vicinity (no exotic ancestors for me then!)
Thought you might find it of interest.
A recent research project based at University College London (UCL) has investigated the distribution of surnames in Great Britain, both current and historic, in order to understand patterns of regional economic development, population movement and cultural identity. This website allows users to search the databases that we have created, and to trace the geography and history of their family names.

Father's name, 1881: Heavily Lancastrian-based but spreading along the M62 corridor almost as far as The Wash; 98.53% English(/unknown). More widespread throughout the North on the later map.
Mother's name, 1881: Still mainly Lancastrian but with more dispersion; by 1998 they'd spread as far as the Outer Hebrides and Dorset, but the main town was Chorley.

Unsurprisingly, the surname 'Atherton' was and still is mainly based in the Leigh, Wigan and Bolton areas.
They can't even pronounce it properly down south... Even I've had to change the way I say it when I answer the phone at work
