This fine Easter weekend I updated my PC from a perfectly working version of Windows XP to Windows Vista Business. Need I say more?

I bought a new PC just before Christmas, which has a free upgrade to Windows Vista. For some reason I feel absolutely no inclination to take advantage of the offer.

Oh, and the multi coloured elephants on the precinct have gone. I kid you not.

I'm fine with the blue shorts. Really.

It's just the grey, wrinkly bastards that I have problems with. :D

I've just had Vista installed on my laptop. Other than for having the temperature displayed on my desktop I still haven't discovered a single advantage. Oh, and it took our IT Bod around four hours to install and was apparently "a fecking nightmare".

Bumpety Bump of the horror story thread. :D

Bought a new laptop about a year ago which had Vista preinstalled and I've not had a problem with it. I got all the programming packages I use installed without too much frigging about and have been satisfied since....in fact I'd go so far as to say I've grown quite fond of the changes from XP; it took a short while to get used to the re-arranged menus and stuff but yeah I'm converted.

So because of that and the fact that they've just reduced their prices I thought I'd upgrade the home desktop up to Vista too.

JAY-ZUS!!! Was that ever a mistake?
Nothing works on it. I can't install drivers or downloaded software as they all fail the digital signing (even the Microsoft ones), the wireless connection is on and off more times than Jay-Jay's international career and internet explorer requires two or three refreshes just to load the pages fully.

I used to smugly laugh at people who had problems with Vista like they were some kind of imbecile too. :(

Vista rocks. Had it running almost 24/7 since launch with no issues at all. Mind you, it does need top end hardware to run it comfortably.

I think it's shite on the whole. It's such a fecking drain on memory - a 120gb hard drive came with 20gb already full! and it's not quick and if you've been used to XP you can't find anything you want because they've renamed it and when you want to change a setting you have to go through at least 2 pointless operations to get it done..

change mouse settings - press ok (pressed)...

do you want to change mouse settings - yes no (yes)

you are changing settings, do you want to continue? yes no (yes)

settings are changing - ok

Have you rememered to turn the gas off? yes no (yes)

just before we change the settings are you really sure, the defaults were perfectly good you know? yes no (yes)

Well don't say we didn't warn you - ok

Just wait till you try doing a bit of home networking with it. It just goes sooooo slow.

Aside from a few issues that are just a pain in the arse its fine and desirable to look at. I'm not pulling teeth on my machine except when transfering files. Such a gripe.

I actually find mine much quicker than on XP but I concede the annoying 'are you sure' pop ups. I actually bought it as I am a bit of a computer nerd, must have the latest etc. But I wouldn't recommend it to the average user who is already using XP. There is no need to upgrade just for the sake of it. Also, never upgrade via Windows. You must do a clean install to get the best out of Vista imo.

new laptop 1.73ghz Dual core and 2mb Ram, deals with it ok but it's just not intuitive.Quite like Media Centre but the whole thing is cumbersome and I've found it clashing with software and causing all sorts of problems at start up

My IT people don't support Vista. We have to pay extra to get XP discs with new hardware!

You can turn off the popups from the 'user account control' in the security center....If they're the ones you mean. :?

I'm still avoiding Vista
I've been using dual XP/Ubuntu for a few months and will try to do the same when I upgrade.
