Khan
Come on Amir, see him off.

Terrific battle and full marks to Amir for coming through it. I can't see him getting to the very top levels though.
For a start off the choice of Oliver Harrison as his first pro trainer was disastrous. Nowhere near enough lateral movement in Khan's work. He's getting better, but there's still too much of the amateur about him.
The main concern though, is what's in his head. He's naive and there are some seriously nasty individuals around at that weight who will take advantage. I hope I'm wrong, because he comes across as a genuine lad with a lot of guts.

Why is it ITV commentators are seemingly intent on seeing Khan lose? Not just tonight but even against that Danish fella last time they spent the whole fight saying how much trouble Khan was in when actually he won just about every round.
Obviously he's still young and has his flaws, but he really can't win. Has them carried out in the first and he's accused of fighting nobodies, and then when he fights someone has a real go at it he's accused of being shit.
He won, it was an exciting fight and he was in control of it for the vast majority. Both times he got hit he recovered brilliantly.

Didn't see tonight's fight but.. he's getting knocked down a disturbing amount of times for someone who thinks he's world class?

There has never been a fighter (Rocky Marciano perhaps) who got to be the best without being able to recover from getting hurt and still come back to win. If there were, then it would be a pointless (forgive the unintentional pun) contest..Mohamed Ali came back from a truly stunning punch from Henry Cooper that floored him grand style, but went on to win, Tyson was fearless and unbeatable, he lost eventually. Hatton tried to go a weight above his norm and lost. He too will have suffered the benefit of learning a lesson.
There will always be a younger, fitter, faster, stronger and better guy coming in from somewhere and every fighter reaches a point of no longer being the best. Age is the biggest leveller in any sport and knowing when to call it a day is the only way to stay undefeated. Khan is young and just coming. He still has some learning to do.He needed to come up against it and know what it's like to be hurt. He did and, to his credit, he rode it and came back to win. That's what makes a champion. At least he'll approach his fights with that knowlege from now on.
I've seen a lot of our potential champion boxers boxers over the years who looked good at home, and then faced the reality of not being good enough internationally to make the grade. We should be proud we have a young guy, more so, a local lad, capable of mixing it with the best and winning. Good luck to the lad.

Not even Marciano. He was knocked down by Jersey Joe Walcott on the bout that saw him win the world title.TANGODANCER wrote:There has never been a fighter (Rocky Marciano perhaps) who got to be the best without being able to recover from getting hurt and still come back to win.
Archie Moore also knocked him down.

Well, I did say "perhaps", it's a long time back (My first memories of boxing were listening with my dad on the radio to Randolph Turpin fighting Joe Lewiswarthog wrote:Not even Marciano. One of my favourite boxing films was Paul Newman portraying Rocky Graziano in "Somebody up there likes me". Cracking film about another great boxer.

You're forgiven. I used to read a lot of boxing biographies.TANGODANCER wrote:Well, I did say "perhaps", it's a long time back (My first memories of boxing were listening with my dad on the radio to Randolph Turpin fighting Joe Lewiswarthog wrote:Not even Marciano. Thomas Hauser's book on Ali is well worth a read, as is "The Black Lights" by the same author.
There's also a good one on Benny Lynch, that gives an account of his life in the Gorbals, although it's a bit grim at the end as he's consumed by alcohol. At one point in one of his later fights, he's seeing double and asks his trainer, "which one do I hit?"
I'm certainly no boxing expert and I'm not that well versed in the history of the sport, but to the best of my knowledge Floyd Mayweather has never been knocked down during any of his professional fights. He's had a few scares( Hatton almost knocked him over in that first round) and some dubious points victories(the first Corrales fight) but to go 39 undefeated and never touching the canvas is a staggering feat.
He has to go down as one of the best ever, it's just a shame his legacy may slightly be tarnished by his outlandish antics. If he had taken on an beaten Cotto before retiring, then I'm sure his legacy would be indisputably secure.

You know, I've been running that through my mind for years now, and it really is. Let us not cheer a local lad on and see how far he can get.warthog wrote:No, it's very Bolton.Bruce Rioja wrote:How pathetically British. It happens every time someone from Bolton has a bit of success.Bruce Rioja wrote:You know, I've been running that through my mind for years now, and it really is. A few months ago, someone regaled me with tales of how Khan has been playing the big man in local night clubs and getting slapped around by the bouncers. It might have been believable, but I've got a longer memory than most. Exactly the same tales went round about Thai boxer, Sandy Holt when he was in the public eye about ten years ago.
The Bolton News first suspended its comments facility due to the poor poison that was being spouted about Khan. I see nothing to dislike about the lad, bar his driving.
To be fair he always seems like a nice enough guy, seems too nice sometimes to me. As for being kicked about by bouncers, i can see that, i personally wouldnt fancy myself of walking away form any sort of scuffle with him, but hed be battered by pretty much any even average heavyweight. He's tiny. Thing is (stating the obvious) he's fighting other tinies, and he's bloody good at that. Agree with folk saying for once we should stop trying to hack away at a pedestal we've built for our stars. We build them up, knoc them down, then when it all goes pear shaped for someone else, we hark back to how good the guy we've destroyed waswarthog wrote:It happens every time someone from Bolton has a bit of success.Bruce Rioja wrote:You know, I've been running that through my mind for years now, and it really is.
