Sounds like our defence spending!Worthy4England wrote:So as I read this, someone wants protection from something, they're not quite sure what it is or whether it's going to happen, they just know they want protection for it?
Great. Maybe they could articulate what it is?

i don't think you will get satisfaction as the PM has said he totally agrees with whatever it was the backbenchers were going to do.... I'm sure he'll explain when he does it (whatever it is)Worthy4England wrote:So as I read this, someone wants protection from something, they're not quite sure what it is or whether it's going to happen, they just know they want protection for it?

We do have Medicare, which is a universal health care system (not dental). It is of course underfunded and there are lengthy waits for non-emergency services. I know little about trade clauses so have no comment.Lord Kangana wrote:Am I not right in saying that Canada has a greater degree of public healthcare provision than the-frankly-stoneage-US? And therefore, under those circumstances is more likely to have an equal need for such a clause?

Re: The Politics Thread
Funding has dropped by £200 per patient in the last 6 years. Of course theres a shortage of money! Bizarrely enough, its a sizeable chunk of about £200 per patient sized deficit.
If you flick back through these pages, I predicted that this government will rid us of our NHS. It has always been their central ideological goal. The argument with Junior doctors and now this are all ammunition for the simple minded amomgst us to go along with it.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

Re: The Politics Thread
Don't know why the Government has such poor ministers at health and education when the whole premise is that the Tories' superior [to Labour] economic management means these two areas are relatively protected while every other department is suffering from 25% cuts to budgets.
We have stories on the NHS and education every week where they're picking stupid fights
At some point in the coming years/decades we need a serious discussion on how to find another 3% of GDP (made up) to spend on health and social care at the expense of something else. Answers cannot mention the Indian space programme or Google's tax arrangements.
Maybe that means [higher rate?] tax payers have to contribute to some form of personal health insurance, or simply pay higher taxes at source, it's basically going to be the same funding source.. So whichever is more efficient will happen

Re: The Politics Thread
Why can't we discuss the taxation of large companies?
Is the answer going to involve them f*cking off from a market worth multiple billions to them because we ask them to pay a few million in tax?
The government advisor from Cambridge strongly disagrees with you. The £176billion year avoided and evaded in taxation is surely the answer staring us in the face?

Not sure who is most ridiculous, Cameron or Boris.
Cameron: if we leave it will be dreadful and everyone will lose their job and we'll all be on fire.
K, so why did you call the referendum then?
Boris: if we stay it will be dreadful and we'll spend all out money and Hitler will come back and it will be the worst.
K, so why did it take you until the last minute to figure out what you thought, after you'd written two different Standard articles, one pro, one anti.

Maybe a warning to all the smug cocksure remainers out there, after all Trump will never get elected, will he?Donald Trump takes poll lead over Hillary Clinton – is it time to panic?
The latest presidential polling average shows the Republican candidate ahead by 0.2 percentage points. But this is not the first indication of a potential Trump win
The US is looking more and more after it's own interests if the people vote in Trump, all this silly 'one world' crap has to end somewhere.

Re: The Politics Thread
In fairness, what with all this over population, food and water shortages, ideological bickering and general cluttered state of the world, we could likely do with a decent bit of internecine warfare.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
