Re: The Politics Thread
I think there is a very good reason for that.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2019 11:57 amI mean you'd want surely want parliament to somewhat be reflective of societies diversity? And its broadly a good thing that parliament is more diverse. There is of course a danger that it becomes a bit "tokenism". Having a brown man there doesn't mean he represents all brown men etc....I'm not sure Sajid Javid represents your average muslim any better than any grey haired white man, nor does for balance, Lammy necessarily represent black people or Diane Abbott....TANGODANCER wrote: ↑Tue Dec 17, 2019 10:33 pmhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2019-50808536
After idly perusing this article it makes me wonder just what is the criteria to be a member of Parliament? Just what exactly has diversity to do with anything if the prime aim is to elect the best and most experienced person to the post regardless of all else. Surely the rest is just a case of leadership and best practise according to the laws of Great Britain? Man, woman, ethnic origin, religion etc etc can have no real bearing on whats' needed to run the country to the best advantage of all within said laws? Emily Pankhurst did her job a long time back but proved nothing at all if such choices are still going to matter.
We're in a bit of a cleft stick right now with drastic changes the order of the day and the mandates of traditional "old-boys club" selection possibly through Westminster's hallowed windows (at least theoretically). I really hope that the new-broom philosophy doesn't mean that all the (hard and costly) lessons learned in the past are about to be ignored in the battles of sectional supremacy and that percentages are going to matter more that collective rational thinking. Is this too much to hope so early I wonder? In my uncomplicated world, men woman and children exist unchanged as they have ever done ,all part of the team with one leader and without anybody else needing to be captains. We have a Prime Minister, let's now hope he steps up and does the job he was voted in for.
One can dream.....Amen.
But I guess broadly its a good thing to be more representative and represent the wider variety of voices across the UK.
And thinking about it the demographic least represented in parliament are the under 35's.

Re: The Politics Thread
On the whole centrist or not for next Labour Leader, a recent poll asked voters which potential leaders a) they had heard of and b) would prefer to be the next leader.
Ranked in order of preference for new leader:
Starmer (3rd most heard of)
Phillips (joint 5th most heard of)
Cooper (most heard of)
Mandy (way down on heard of)
Thornberry (2nd most heard of)
Gardiner (way down)
Rayner (joint 5th)
Lammy (4th)
Ashworth (way down, I haven't heard of him!)
RBL (6th)
Burgon (way down)
Lewis (way down).
Pretty clear trend there. Also, lol at Clive Lewis imagine somehow being below RB.

Re: The Politics Thread
Of that crowd I'd not look.past Phillips. Charismatic, genuine, modern socialist with enough strength and energy to go head to head with Johnson. Of course she has about as much chance of being elected as I do.
Re: The Politics Thread
You mean when she skips her anger management courses?
She grates, is nauseating and makes even Sturgeon look and sound decent!
Re: The Politics Thread
Just don't get it these left whingers do they?Laura Pidcock, who was booted out of her North West Durham Seat earlier this month, said 'Blair's legacy still hangs around this party like a millstone'.
Gravey train left without you love?
Re: The Politics Thread
As @teaforpterasaur put it in Twitter:
"You lost your seat because of Tony Blair. The seat you won in 2017. On the doorstep over and over people said Laura, I know I voted for you two years ago, 14 years after the invasion of Iraq, but now it's 16 years after the invasion of Iraq I just can't."
St Jeremy is flawless, so we need to give out who is to blame. Must be Tonty Blair.

Re: The Politics Thread
I like Philips. Not sure she's (yet) capable of persuading people beyond the heartlands. That list I posted wouldn't be far off my own list of preferences.

Re: The Politics Thread
Pru, Phillips just dos not like differing opinion, the way she screws up her face and rolls her eyes about making it blatantly obvious would not go down well. Don't forget it's about winning over a lot more electors than labour lost to gain power. The only hope they have is if Boris screws up big time and they have a decent leader. This left/moderate position fight is going to take years to clear up and I doubt they will be ready for next time if Boris repeals the fixed term parliament act.
Re: The Politics Thread
I know that's the perception of her but I think it's unfair and changeable. I think it's largely come about because she didn't see eye to eye with the leadership and so the only time she was in the public eye really was when she was all guns blazing attaching the govt. I think she's capable of more nuance and getting on with people she doesn't agree with. I mean, she has a semi well-publicised friendship with Jacob Rees-Mogg and he certainly has differing opinions, on almost everything!
But she isn't scared to stand up and fight her corner, as seen by her response to e.g. the Anderton School protests in her constituency. I think she has the "authenticity" that people wanted to (wrongly, imo) ascribe to Corbyn.

Re: The Politics Thread
Just been reading about Lansman, the left and momentum have no intention of going anywhere soon and there is a hell of a lot more of them in higher positions than when militant was crushed.
Re: The Politics Thread
Oh Wera apart from using up valuable time of the emergency services and getting in the way, just what do you expect the PM to do, drain the water away?Wera Hobhouse, the Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, said: “With so many flood warnings in place across the UK, hundreds of families are facing the awful prospect of being forced out of their homes over the Christmas period.
“The fact that, once again, the prime minister isn’t even planning to visit flood-hit communities says it all. This is a man who is perfectly comfortable weathering the storm from the comfort of his own home, rather than confronting the grim reality that hundreds of people across the UK are having to deal with.
Half the bloody country is flooded, heavy rain and towns sprouting up on flood plains, so the PM can turn up and cure it?
What are you doing for the electorate instead of moaning in the Guardian about Boris?
