Please don't flounce. Its unbecoming.

Its more fun discussing the issues than acting like 12 year old bell-ends and, I don't know, signing up for a party you detest just to vote for the candidate you're least afraid of.

Stick around. It'd be a poorer thread without somebody trying to drag it out of the playground.

I never said you were trolling. I didn't mean you so that's just your guilty conscience mate.
However if you're going to strop off like a tart because a holy moderator sticks his nose in when someone asks if you've sold Socialist Worker then maybe a politics thread is too much for you. Can I interest you in a Where are you going tonight or maybe a West Ham are compete failures, let's all laugh at 'em instead?

Or pull up a stool in 'General's Shit Chat'.

Can't say I'm grabbed by any of the candidates. If I worked for Madame Tussaud's I would plump for Burnham or if I was a fan of the Dr Seuss oeuvre then I might go for Cooper. Jeremy seems to have a big problem separating his white shirts from his coloureds and frankly Liz is no Felicity.

freeindeed wrote:Why Blairites are going hysterical
August 11, 2015
In 1994 Blair took over the Labour party and made it safe for British capitalism. Which is why so many top companies and banks were content to contribute large sums to the party in order to hedge their bets – they gained whichever party won the elections. Up till now they have dominated the Labour party for the last 20 years. Blair’s abiding legacy, apart from the Iraq war, was to abandon the fundamental principles of the party and to assimilate it instead to the Thatcherite ideology of ‘let the markets rule and the State get out of the way’. When Mrs. Thatcher was later asked what was her greatest achievement, she replied without hesitation: ‘New Labour’. And the Daily Telegraph 6 months into Blair’s premiership published a half-page photo of Blair standing in front of a large picture of Thatcher in No.10 with the inscription underneath: ‘To Thatcher, a son’. By accommodating the ruling corporate class the Blairites used the Labour party as their avenue to power, and it’s hardly surprising now that they are in such a state of denial and disbelief at their abrupt fall from power over the last month.

Of course the Blairite faction is sincere in believing that they alone know how things should best be run and that, as Blair himself has constantly reminded us, any millimetre departure from his prescribed course will bring chaos and disaster. Not only does that show their unwillingness to listen (the party was virtually disbanded under Blair into a press release and door-knocking organisation), but it also exposes a deep arrogance about their own invincibility and their contempt for any radicalism from the Left. The writing was already on the wall in Greece, Spain, and Scotland, but still they thought they could muffle dissent and ignore it. It is a lesson in political nemesis.

Of course the Blairites will protest that they, and they alone, won three elections in a row. The truth however is that the Tories threw away the 1997 election rather than that Labour distinctively won it, the second election was marked by stasis after an undistinguished 4 years, and the third saw the loss of 4 million votes after Iraq. They will also appeal to the huge investment in health and education. But a large part of the former was spent on building (fine for the construction industry rather than the essentials of health) and on outsourcing and privatisation (again good for the corporates rather than patients), whilst in the case of the latter there were huge building programmes inaugurating academies and free schools which have never proved their worth and have never been popular.
- Michael Meacher
This is the problem. A lot of stuff the Corbyn camp throw it is true. But then there is a lot of hyperbole and rubbish thrown into to mix.

The Tories threw away the 1997 election rather than Labour winning it? What a load of absolute rot. Labour won the election because for the first time in 20 odd years they were deemed a viable choice by the electorate. The inconvenient truth is that when they were closer to the vision Corbyn presents they were rejected outright, time after time. They couldn't even win when the Tories had the least charismatic leader the world has ever seen counting his peas....

Since the hyperbole is strong, I'll add my own. When Corbyn suffers electoral humiliation and sentences the country to at least 5 more years of Tory rule, the suffering and plight of the poor and the public services will be directly on the hands of those backing Corbyn in this race. Nobody else will be to blame but those people who ignore the time we are living in and the practicality required to make things better.

:D I'm really not sure it's correct that labour have presented themselves for election with a vision anywhere close to what Corbyn presents, "time after time"..

Other than Michael foot - can you remember another one in your lifetime?

anyway - that's YOUR hyperbole! :D In elections there's hyperbole on all sides - there's plenty of hyperbole coming from all of the candidates.. that's how it goes! chill!

I said closer. Foot was closest and look at the disaster there. Kinnock was closer to Corbyn than Blair.

But it is ridiculous to re-write history. Labour won in 1997 with a huge sweep of momentum thanks to the credibility that Smith and Blair had fought hard to establish amongst the voting public with the Labour party.

I totally agree that Blair doesn't have the magic mandate, there are many ways to make the party electable again. But starting a class war, enraging the tabloids even more and repeating mistakes made in the 70's just isn't one of them.

aye - but (as I said) other than Foot?? I can't think of anyone who offered an agenda anything even remotely close to what Corbyn is about.. can you?

Kinnock? hmmmm... he was the forerunner to Blair - he took on the "hard" left - famously!

(and Kinnock wasn't elected cos he nearly fell in the sea that time! )

A refreshing distraction from all that bollocks we post on the Trotters board.

I can't help thinking there will be some bright, young, up and coming Labour MPs, that considered running against Burnham and Cooper, counting their blessings just now. No doubt looking to the next, probably not too far away, leadership contest.

Why? Corbyn is the saviour of the Labour Party and country and will be PM in 2020 as part of a huge global socialist uprising.

At least according to people on here.......

Kinnock close to Foot?

Whats the point of a discussion based on such poor understanding of the subject?

hmmm... either that, or labour MPs plot a coup and then hatch a fiendish plan to import David Milliband complete with white charger just in time to save the day... :?

You just kinda over do the Corbyn 'love in', we get your drift.
I think it is good for politics the emergence of Corbyn and will lead once and for all to the answer, is the UK left, centre or right wing?

I met Andy Burnham on the tube yesterday. He has a very red nose. Wished him luck in the campaign.

Can someone explain why, now the candidates have been chosen, it's going to take 6 weeks for those eligible to vote for their choice? Or is this campaign time with a vote at the end?
