Best Clint Eastwood film ever.
I first met Clint Eastwood when we were punching cattle together in Rawhide. Course, he wasn't called that then, he was Rowdy Rates; young, a bit flash, brash and all fast draw. ( In one of his musings Eastwood called Yates "The idiot of the plains"). Had several years of that and then I didn't see him again until he got himself injured and locked in a girls school in Beguiled. Over the years since then he's made enough films to put a dozen fast-film developers out of work trying to keep up.
From the Play Misty for Me era, the Spaghetti Western era, the Dirty Harry era and the better class Westerns, Pale Rider, The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Eastwood went on to do countles more, before turning out one of the best Westerns ever in Unforgiven. He got even better in Million Dollar Babe and his latest film Gran Turino is an absolute classic of good story, superb acting and great directing. With too many titles to avoid boring with, what's your favourite Eastwood offering?

You seen Gran Turino yet Hoss? It's a must.CrazyHorse wrote:Great question.
Without doubt it's Dirty Harry; the first film of the series. The others are all good too but the original is superb. Great story and sub-plots, the evil-in-camp-way bad guy, great one liners and the right amount of action/violence. Pure Gold.

It's clearly not going to win many votes as the best Eastwood film, but the one that I enjoyed most has got to be Every Which Way But Loose. I probably watched it about 30 times as a child. Seeing it again recently, it occured to me how well Clint actually handled the comedy. Seeing straight actors in comedy roles can often be a painful experience but that wasn't the case here.

TG TB and TU...
But his presence in a movie doesn't make me want to go and see it, that's for sure - i know what i'm going to get, and while it's nowhere near as basic as stallone, it's pretty much as predictable...
so, if you like it... go see it... if not... pick and choose... gran turino's trailers aren't grabbing me...

I think it was Roudy Yates not Rates in Rawhide, but I could be wrong my memory isn't as good as it used to be.
Best film as a Director has to be Mystic River.
Best film as Actor and Director is probably Unforgiven but Gran Torino comes close to that. How the film and Clint missed out on Oscar nominations beats me.
Best film as an actor only is probably Bridges of Maddison County.

Check along a word or two in my original post and you'll see it was Yates. Just a typo, like you made with Roudy instead of Rowdy.FaninOz wrote:I think it was Roudy Yates not Rates in Rawhide, but I could be wrong my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

but madison county sees him grossly miscast, and streep phoning in a performance from the stock cupboard... a really slight movie. i'm told the book is better, but i'm not interested enough to find out...

A guy of seventy dying of tubercolosis doesn't kick ass too well, not even Eastwood.finlayson wrote:Gran Tourino is a good film but the ending is shite. Would have liked him to kick some arse to be honest, like Pale Rider, Hang 'em High, HPD.Just been looking through my Eastwood VHS collection...
Finlayson...off to paint the town red!!!
