Are ageing lefties in denial?

Post by Zulus Thousand of em » Fri Jul 16, 2010 12:15 pm

Hang on whilst I remove the pin and lob this little beauty in. FIRE IN THE HOLE!! (as they say in the US of A)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-10633782

It may be too late for some of our ageing leftie posters to reverse this alarming trend - but they might be able to help some of their younger idealistic fellow travellers.

Discuss.

To have any chance of that happening we'd need to re-open the cotton mills, pits and factories and have another World War. Different world.

Fair play, Bish.

A genuinely dedicated man. When you have managed to be so far removed from the realities of the time that you try to take your employer down pointless blind alleys ... try for an affair with your step-daughter, have affairs with two of your employyees and a journalist ... I will finally believe you've achieved greatness.

God bless him, I think he did, honestly, mean well, but his failure to stop the march of the extreme left taking over Labour led to the growth in power of Militant Tendency and the more ludicrous Union politics of the day directly led to the fall of old Labour and the increased control of Thatcher.

So, anyone who bemoans the Thatcher years ... or the New Labour excesses for that matter ... should recognise the results of this well meaning, but deeply flawed individual.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I don't believe I described Foot as flawless - but am I still allowed to admire him? maybe I don't have such an inflated view of myself that the only way forward is to aspire to absolute perfection?

(and how do you know I haven't already completed your task list?)

It may be too late for some of our ageing leftie posters to reverse this alarming trend - but they might be able to help some of their younger idealistic fellow travellers.

Discuss.

By all means Vicar, admire who you wish & however you wish. I must have misinterpreted your words describing him as "a giant of a man" as being that you viewedg him with rose tinted spectacles (first mention of this for months, do I get a prize ?).

Given that you are aware that he was a serial philanderer and niaive politician, responsible for mismanaging his party ... I just hadn't appreciated that you admire and aspire to these traits ... then I withdraw any implied criticism, utterly.

(... &, in fact, according to my sources, you've still got one of his weakeness' to go before you meet his amazing standards).
