Most disturbing film ever?

After being physically sickened by Irreversible last night, which makes A Clockwork Orange look like Toy Story – got me thinking what is the most disturbing film ever?

I’ve seen a few recently that have affected me, in that they are still in my mind a day or so later. Casey Affleck beating Jessica Alba in ‘The Killer inside me’ and the old fella in a wheelchair in ‘The Pianist’ were particularly bad graphically, but sometimes the suggestive off camera stuff can be just as bad, like Oldboy when you find out the girl is his daughter and you think back to the earlier scene in the bedroom!

Obviously people have different reactions to different things, I’m never bothered about the supernatural, ghosts and monsters, or the blood and gore slasher types, and I wasn’t even swayed by The Human Centipede – they all make us jump and cringe but im talking about content that leave you actually nauseas; women, or men for that matter brutally raped and beaten, the persecution of the Jews, African genocide, child cruelty or poverty etc etc… and then theres the just plain weird that also gets under your skin!

Also, why do we keep doing it to ourselves? obviously a gluten for punishment, I’ve just added ‘Salo Or The 120 Days Of Sodom’ to my rental list.

Yeah Irreversible is plain wrong, you get the feeling the director was enjoying "that" scene a bit too much!

I watched some pretty rough Japanese films when I worked at Blockbuster, we used to get a shipment of them in every Thursday morning but has to wait till weekend to find out which ones we were allowed to put on the shelves for rental.

One that made it I cant remember the title, this bird ended up slicing off a chap's leg with some razor wire and also kept feeding vomit to some fellow held hostage in a sack!

One that didn't make it... "Visitor Q". I dont know where to start. I took it home for a watch; final scene - a woman feeding her husband and daughter her own breast milk in a greenhouse (theyd have used to kitchen but it was already flooded... with milk)

Those Jpanese ay?

Good heavens. Have a bucket ready for that one.

Some viewers of these films watch them out of a morbid fascination with how low humanity can go whilst being insulated from it themselves - and in other cases there's just a general love of being repulsed. And the people who make the films want to push boundaries of what exactly they can get away with for audiences.

Gaspar 'Irreversible' Noe has just done a film called Enter the Void which features a sex scene that will make you think "how did they get a camera in there??"

Ichii the Killer...

And the old 'video nasties' are slowly being re-released...

Well I saw "Buried" last week ... & shite as it was the descriptions above make it seem like an episode of Family Guy.

While I'm talking about it tho ... if you fancy 110m of your life being very similar to the first half of the Bolton v Stoke game LAST season then by all means go & see it. There was not one uplifting moment in the whole thing. It gave the word 'turgid' a whole new meaning.

I was told off by someone for giving the ending away ... fair enough point except it takes some doing bothering to saty for the end, let alone stay awake.

They're made by film directors who all pulled the legs off spiders when they were kids. Violence in films started way back even before Walt Disney. Hey, life is pretty good guys, if you just let yourselves realise it.

Man bites dog - where the camera crew started to join in the rape & murder was pretty appalling.

Rape scenes, particularly gang rapes are very difficult to stomach - The Accused & Casualties of War spring to mind

It's on pirate bay, but I'd recommend that you don't watch it, I understand the reasons why it has been made and the justifications given by the director, but in this case it's a step too far even for this horror fan.

Tell you what though, watched Exorcist (Extended) on blu-ray last night, absolutely shat mesen! Hadn't ever seen that bit where she's walking down the stairs like a crab. Bloody frightening and much, much better than some of the Eli Roth shit on display today. Not bad for a 40 year old film.

Speaking of Roth, has anyone been watching that Mark Gatiss History of Horror thing? Bloody superb!

I have. In total agreement with you. Loved the Hammer episode - they might be a bit tame by today's standards but were incredibly well done.

The opening scene to Jaws still gets me. So brilliantly shot and acted. I feel the woman's shock, fear and hopeless panic everytime, as she realises she's being eaten and has no chance of ever making it to shore.

Others to consider:

The end of Milla Jovovich in The Messenger

A recent one were a guy is eaten alive my a pack of wolves in 'Frozen'

The rape and following suicide in 'Scum'

A certain scene in 'teeth' nuff said'

The death of Joe Pesci's character in Casino

Amistad the scene where people are thrown alive off the boat with weights attached to them

Some of the traps in the Saw films I find disturbing.

If you want to escape - climb through this barbed wire.

Or cut out your eye to get the key.

Or risk being burned alive by holding this candle up to read the numbers on the wall which are the numbers to that safe.

Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Hands down a harrowing film that needs to be watched once but I wouldn't watch again.
