Re: Today I'm happy about......
Well, yes, sort of. When I posted that I was in East Midlands airport waiting for my flight to be called. But, yes, I flew out to Florida to see the launch.
I found out last week that my firm's US operation have a concessionary bloc of tickets for Cape Canaveral, and with the Elon Musk flight being sold out I could still actually go. I had to pay for flight, hotel, and car hire, but fxck me I could have a free ticket for the Feel the Heat event. A guaranteed entry to Merritt Island and a visit to the Kennedy Space Flight Centre with a place reserved in the Apollo/Saturn V Visitor Centre - the closest place possible to the launch site. It was less than three miles from the launch. It was fxcking amazing. I had a couple of minutes talking to Buzz Aldrin with the CEO of our American branch a few hours before the launch. It looked like it wasn't going to happen and then it was on again.
Fxck me, I've never experienced anything like it. The 'thud' when the engines turned on, even three miles away, was something extraordinary. The twin descent of the side boosters as they came over our heads at twice the speed of sound was..., was, indescibable. The sonic boom hit after they'd landed. The choreography of the dual landing (left of the VAB from my position), was like sci-fi. Like Thunderbirds. I cried. It was out of this world, fxcking Amazing. I'm still shaking.
The only downer was my works said my phone would piggy back onto the Rogers network, but I had no signal at all.
Anyway, just got back, need to find a taxi/bus, and to bed.

It's not something that particularly interests me tbh but that does sound amazing. I don't expect there are too many of the old astronauts from the apollo missions still alive, so that there with Buzz Aldrin was an incredible privilege I imagineLost Leopard Spot wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 7:29 pmWell, yes, sort of. Yes, I wasn't expecting that at all. I'd been dragged away from the corporate bun-fest (not that I minded, I knew nobody there at all, being the only one from the UK) to have a photo taken, and it was then we were introduced to Buzz. I was possibly over sensitive to him being in a fish in a bowl situation, and could've badgered him more, but the American boss man was a little bit cringemaking in his expansive eagerness to keep reminding us all that we were talking to the Second Man To Step Foot On The Moon - like we didn't know that.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2018 2:32 pmIt's not something that particularly interests me tbh but that does sound amazing. But hey, I'm not really even moaning about that, without boss man I'd never have got a ticket anyway.

Paul Allen, and his six month search for the USS Lexington... Okay, he didn't actually search, he just funded the search. But it makes me happy that the billionaire winners of modern commercialism are 'investing' their riches into 'hobbies' that 'benefit' mankind. Blue Origin, SpaceX, and now the co-founder of Microsoft's undersea hunt have made me feel better about humans.

Welcome back A.T. Glad you made it safely. That's a pretty spectacular vista you have there. Going to be a bit different climate wise to what you just left, but the view is sensational so that should help make up.
