the press
don't usually read tabloids but today I read through the sun and the star in the van. Now I accept these are both bullshit 'newspapers', and are as worth as much as Joanna Yeates pizza, but who the fcuk gave them licence to print such absolute bollocks? What really gets me is they can comment about something/someone and quote 'a source said' or 'an insider said'. Filth rags I wouldn't wipe me arse on

Heard on R4 the other night.

Major distress was caused after the recent floods when it was reported in an Australian newspaper:
'More than 30,000 pigs have been floating down the Dawson River since last weekend...'
But the next morning...
Correction
'What Baralaba piggery-owner Sid Everingham actually said was "30 sows and pigs", not "30,000 pigs".'

Many moons ago I arranged a piece of publicity into the local rag ... it was to advertise an upcoming Pantomime production of "Dick Wittington and His Cat". We sent some info & I had a brief telephone chat.
Imagine my 'amusement' when the headline read that the theatre was showing "Annie's Cat" the following week.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Re: the press
Tabloids make things up. That's why they get sued. They also go to any lengths necessary to get pointless celebrity stories. Never mind phone hacking; one tabloid dirt digger I know of followed a famous person home, climbed their wall, broke into their shed and ran a ladder up to the bedroom window, gleefully peeping in on the bedtime activity that chavs snap up in their hundreds.
Tabloids make people like Jade Goody and Katie Price famous; they pay young girls to ensare famous people in honeytraps; they undermine World Cup bids and anything else that could be good for the country. Tabloids present opinion as fact and stir up hatred.
Still, freedom of the press, eh?

Re: the press
We can rail against it all we like, but these are the circulation figues for the daily's for 2010 ;
The Sun-------------------3,006,565
Daily Mail------------------2,120,347
Daily Mirror----------------1,218,425
Daily Star--------------------779,376
Daily Telegraph------------691,128
Daily Express---------------674,640
The Times-------------------508,250
Financial Times------------390,315
Daily Record----------------323,831
The Guardian--------------302,285
Evening Standard---------238,403 (2009 fig)
The Independent----------185,815
No-ones forcing people to buy along these lines. So the great British public seem to prefer thair comics to the 'quality' press.

I find it quite amusing when we get some story quoted - often around thorny topics like immigration or benefits cheats etc. and someone trots out indignantly, that "people don't think like that - there's only those that read the Sun/Mail/Mirror, think like that"....bobo the clown wrote:We can rail against it all we like, but these are the circulation figues for the daily's for 2010 ;

Well - yes - that would appear to be a fairly comfortable majority of newspaper readers then...

Like urging its readership to vote Lib Dem last time...
Still, given that readership, and the fact that most will have ignored it... Probably not to blame for the stench surrounding us...

Someone told me the other day that the Daily Mail online is the most read newspaper website in the world. Please someone, anyone, provide the data to say this is bollox.
I read The Telegraph and The Independent as it happens. though papers are not what they were.

Re: the press
The Telegraph bit surprises me...
I wish the Independent had better writing (but what do I know, really? I only get it when I'm catching a train for a long journey...)
I do the Ob on Sunday... Sports pages, theatre reviews and Rawnsley good value... I think it's great having a theatre critic called Clapp...
