Summer holidays...
Am off to Weymouth, Portland to be precise. Any of you northeners ever ventured down to Dorset for a holiday? Can you give me any recomendations of things to do? (other then wave to Pirate on the IofW) Me and Mr GG can't really be painting the town red, what with the 2 baby gooners in tow and i haven't been organised enough to get a guide book. Ideas from people who have been before welcomed!
Wheres everyone else off to on holiday this year?

Re: Summer holidays...
Bit cloudy and overcast for the first 2 days, bit gutted as we thought that's what it would be like for the 2 weeks. But, the sun burst though and it was glorious for the rest of our time there. Yes, yes I do have a tan.Gooner Girl wrote:Oh yes, i remember you saying. Was it sunny? Got a suntan?Annoyed Grunt wrote:Rhodes. 2 weeks. Loved it.Gooner Girl wrote:Where did you go? We went there when #2 son was only a baby & enjoyed a nice break.Gooner Girl wrote:Am off to Weymouth, Portland to be precise. Any of you northeners ever ventured down to Dorset for a holiday? Can you give me any recomendations of things to do ?
Many lovely beaches. Weymouth itself is a typical old-style British beach holiday. Great beach, donkey rides & I recall a great local ice-cream.
Bournmouth is worth a trip, Brownsea Island too. Try a trip to the New Forest.
Wareham is a pretty town, nice walks and a Teddy Bear museum. Even if the twins are too young to appreciate it you & Mt GG will.
A trip to Tolpuddle, if you must and then off to Dorchester which is nice. Don't miss the chalk-man with the big willy which will bring a smile to the face of the 20yr old boy trawling duck food around in the van which seems to be constantly behind you.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Thanks Bobo. I'll be sure to tell Mr GG about the teddy bear museum. Not sure he will be able to contain his excitement though...

Am fairly certain it won't be quite as relaxing, sunny or exotic as our trip to the Dominican Republic a couple of years ago but the general public wouldn't have thanked us for 8 month old twins on an aeroplane i suspect...

Brilliant, love that.
Just a big thatched cottage which is a museum in memory of some trouble makers from 2 centuries ago.
Nowt much.

Meanwhile, there's a bird sanctuary on Portland with Swans & flamingo's.

Re: Summer holidays...
I think they have the Piddle breweries down there... we went on holiday to Weymouth a couple of years ago - bought home some bottles of Piddle Beer as amusing gifts....
chesil beach (huge long shingle bank that holds in the Fleet lagoon) - all pebbles though... this is it from Portland..

Chesil Beach by revnev, on Flickr
also nearby - Abbotsbury - where there is a swannery
err... apparently you are not allowed to say the word "rabbit" on Portland....

The lowdown...

Bobo would once have been sympathetic to the cause of the Tolpuddle martyrs.
but he grew up and grumpy.
Not a good career move for a clown.
there is also an annual festival that an number of my mates have been to, and more than once...

Chesil beach is very near where we are staying. Would like to get a decent pic of it like yours.
Wonder if Mike would notice if i bought a swan home to join the rest of the waterfowl?
