Fair feck*! Well done to her.

Something I've always wondered - how do you start pole vault? Like, that first go surely there's a pretty high chance you come boinging bank where you came from, from 10 feet up?
Everyone asks that! You build up very gradually. You practice all kinds of different drills, using the pole to take your weight into sand pits to start with, before going onto the bed without a bar, in training they then use a flexi bar to go over once they can get onto the bed so don’t ever hurt themselves landing on it, today was her first time vaulting a proper hard bar. They practice a lot of gymnastics moves on the bed for warm ups and there’s a set of gym rings there too, they do lots of core conditioning exercises and hand stands etc, not to mention sprint reps with a massive long stick in your hands! It’s really interesting to watch her train!

Daughter did her first pole vault competition today so new pb - and a club record, she really enjoyed it! One of England Athletics more random licensed competition venues, a big barn on a farm in the middle of nowhere!
Good for her. I'd be absolutely terrified. 😁

She’d feel much the same as you if asked to run any further then a long jump run up! (Can’t think where she gets that dislike of distance running from… 🤥)

Still zero running for me but have been embracing the exercise classes, Pilates, Grit, legs bums and tums and spin amongst others. Have to hope it’s helping a bit!

Accidentally ran 10 miles yesterday. I've started running with some of my tri group on Wednesday evenings. Our usual run leader didn't make it so I was asked if I knew a route. Suggested that we do a loop which (in my head) was about 6 miles. Started from the stadium and ran down CNR to Regent Road then up to the A6 and back round. 6.5 miles later....plus I then had to run home another 3.5 miles......

Just watched Alec Yee win the Trithalon in Abu Dabai. What a brilliant athlete he is. First we had the Brownlee brothers, then Alistair on his own, now Yee. Class acts all.

That wasn’t yesterday! :D

Still cracking on with Grit once a week, LBT, Pilates, even some badminton and pole vault, anything to avoid running basically!

He was a question on Only Connect last night. Linked with Olga Korbut (sp?), Anton Panenka and some cricketer I'd never heard of, who all devised their own unique technique that was named after them.

Fosbury is the real stand out amongst them, since his technique replaced all others. 1976 was the last Olympics where a high jumper medalled using one of the old methods. Straddle jump in that instance.

RIP

Straddle jump and scissors were the norm high jump styles onto a coconut matting at our school. You wouldn't be doing Fosbury Flops onto that. :D

Watched English girl Georgia Taylor Brown earlier, win the Cagliari Women's Triathlon. The tri- athletes must be amongst the fittest people on the planet. They swim the channel, win the Milk Race on bikes then run a half-marathon in searing heat and still come out alive. ..Amazing. .
