Tennis, anyone.....?
This is the tennis thread!
Where people can be angry at Andy Murray or get angry about women's annoying noises
I've stayed away on holiday an extra night to guarantee my enjoyment from watching the Australian Open Men's Tennis Final!
Read in the paper that tickets to tonight's final are around £406!!!!
It better be a five setter!!! (with Nadal winning!

One out of two isn't that bad, 2399. Don't cry as it makes your mascara all streaky and horrible.

I was glad Djokovic won, he made hard work of it though.

not normally into tennis - but I got drawn in - didn't really care who won - but Djokovic was the better over all and deserved to win..Jokers in White wrote:I was glad Djokovic won, he made hard work of it though.
Nadal, though - despite being heavily battered in the 2nd and 3rd sets - he's a plucky never-say-die fighter - you have to admire his tenacity!
Re: Tennis, anyone.....?
Murray will win a few before his time is up.
Wimbledon won't be one of them though.

Win a few what? If you mean grand slams then I don't think he will.Jakerbeef wrote:Murray will win a few before his time is up.

He was ahead of Djokovic a few years back but look at the work Novak has put in to get to another level entirely.
To win Murray needs to get past Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. I'm not sure he has the right mentality to keep going and playing consistently well and just wait for his chance and then take it.
Will be happy to be proven wrong though!
Re: Tennis, anyone.....?
Djokovic's rise should be inspirational, not disheartening. What's to say he can't also raise his game? Murray's made at least the semis of the last 5 slams (actually only a handful of people have ever done that) and is playing better every time. I've watched his matches and he's starting to reign in the temperament too.
It's a media fallacy that there's a gulf between 3rd and 4th. Anyone however from 5th down, he often butchers. Barring something I haven't seen from Tsonga or Ferrer, he's the only one with a shot at beating those 3 in a slam final over the next few years.

Well, this could be interesting. How will Murray manage to f*ck up getting to the final now?! If we are ever going to see him get there, this year is now surely it?
I only saw the last two games of Nadal-Rosol, so cannot really comment on the performance of the Czech fella, but the mental strength he showed in that final game was outstanding. Never a hint of him letting Nadal back into it. Performance of a lifetime it seems.

I'll have you a pint (as I'm sure our paths will cross on licenced premises before too long) that he goes out to Marcos Baghdatis, Chief.Prufrock wrote:Well, this could be interesting. Am taking the old man to Centre Court tomorrow for his first visit to SW19... so that will be at least two cheering Baghdatis on.

And then Djokovic dropped the first set today! Currently 5-2 up in the second though, so looks like he'll be fine.
I think I'll take you up on that. Baghdatis seems too obvious as the kind of maverick who could ruin it. I think he'll make it through, only to cock it up later on.

I only saw a few games in the last set, but it was like a Terminator was on court - If it wasn't a big Ace it was a huge winner before a rally could even develop.
The stats flashed up Aces were about 20 each but he must have served about 8 in his last 3 service games. Astonishing as being so low-ranked I would normally assume he was a capable player but mentally weak.

When you have big weapons, as Rosol does, there will be rare days when the cosmos aligns for you and you can beat anyone. Reminds me of when Soderling beat him playing like a man possessed (although Soderling is a much more consistent player than Rosol, I grant you).
