Having a number 3 who consistently takes his time getting to 30 is a big improvement on what we’ve had the last couple of years. As I said, in almost all other eras he’d be under pressure but for now he’s just about doing the job we need. In this series root has come in before the 25th over once. Finally the middle order seems to be getting a bit of protection.

As a number 3 he has an average of 31 - I think only South Africa's number 3 has a lower average (including Bangladesh).

I’m not denying I’m judging him with a very low bar, but he is an improvement on what we’ve had at 3 for the past few years. A few months ago we’d have killed for someone to just linger around and do what he’s doing now. Is he going to be the bedrock on which a world number 1 side is built? No. Is he offering a bit of short term stability in a problem position? Undoubtably.

For number 3 I’d have been tempted to give Ballance another go. I know he’s been ditched twice, but initially he was a good player and scored some important runs. He seemed to lose confidence and get into a habit of overthinking things and his technique went haywire, but he’s back on form for Yorkshire. Even if not scoring heavily he’s got the ability to hang around and blunt the attack slightly before the middle order come in. Even when he was coming under heavy criticism his record for England wasn’t *that* bad, especially compared to who else has been tried recently.
And the thing is - he's the type we need. A blocker.
Yeah, he was jettisoned for spending ages getting a load of 20s. Our expectations of the top 3 are so low that consistently doing that this series would be a success and protect the middle order for long enough.
I'm warming to this idea. Ballance at 3 and Root and 4 would make a lot of sense and give us some semblance of a top order than on paper at least looks balanced (pardon the pun).

We desperately need someone who can blunt the bowling and Ballance might be it. I imagine our top order will have very little resistance as it stands. I'm expecting 4/5 down by lunch frequently this series for both sides. I just feel their world class batsman in Smith is better than ours in Root and that for me is the only real point of difference. If Smith averages an extra few that could be the difference between the two sides.
In Denly we seem to have found what we hoped Ballance might be able to offer 6 months ago. He’s a pragmatic stop gap for now.

He's averaging 41 in the 5 tests played since we were told he's hopeless and Balance is the future, jimbo.

Looks like Root's right royally f*cked this one up too!

I've come to realise that using the term 'taking the wicket of De Kock' is less likely to alarm people than 'Getting De Kock out' :)

It's always tough when you consider that de Kock isn't actually in.

Looks like pitch flattened rather than England suddenly learned how to bat.....

Is it unreasonable that I'm feeling a little twitchy because SA have reached 117 / 1 whilst having the rest of today and all day tomorrow to go at it? :?

Its a major cock up of unearthly proportions if they win from here. They'd still need to score over 300 in a day on a ground where that doesn't very often happen - batting last. And normally even on a flat surface once teams think they can win - a few wickets fall.

But I do worry that all that has happened is the pitch has deadened and flattened out....I'm a bit mystified as to why Broad and Anderson aren't bowling (one of them at a time) - given they are our senior strike bowlers and surely they should have had a burst before the end of the day.....

3.5 runs per over. Piece of pi$$. You'd get that from one end, with 4 ball overs, in a T20 and it's less than England's run-rate in our second innings.

We'd have potentially gone a lot quicker had Denly not got such an appalling strike rate (that was just for Enoch's benefit) :-)

Great knocks by a few of ours today and delighted for Sibley's ton.

Yes, Bruce, unreasonable.

Enoch, mate, they need 275 with 7 wickets remaining (one of whom is De Kock) and all day to get them on a flat track. :?

They have to score at almost 4 an over to win from here. They still need more runs (after hour and a half play) than are generally scored in a full day's play at Newlands....it would be an absolute cock up of virtually unheralded proportions for SA to win this.....

Someone will have to explain why we've given Curran the new ball just before lunch and in two overs he's managed two deliveries that made the batsman play?

Surely to god you get Broad and Anderson on for spells before and after lunch....they're old but surely could have managed a short spell broken by lunch......
