Leach bowling round the wicket to left handers, pitching it outside leg, is just drivel.

Feel like containment approach, that. Not sure what it's likely to achieve...

Aye, if they're 300-1 and you're trying to slow it down, maybe. But they're *still* milking him easily without really trying and zero wicket taking threat. Insane. If you pick him, trust him, if you don't trust him, don't pick him.

Hmmm. Felt like it was nicely balanced after day 1 but not great news to wake up to this morning. We could be looking at another innings defeat here if they get much past 400.

Bit surprised they declared. Inability to catch costing us another ~ 110 runs. Poor show. I listened to Ashley Giles laying out all the reasons it's heading the way it is and whilst I was marginally sympathetic to the "won once in 34 years and COVID, played the top two sides then Aus" stuff, I think it's the nature of the defeats that's the larger worry...

Well, they're either hoping we'll make a game of it, or or they're taking the piss! :D

Giles’ recent contributions seem to be focused as much on preserving his own reputation amongst all this.

It's not like he's overlooking an array of oven-ready test players that are glaring omissions...so I think there's some mitigation.

He binned Ed Smith and give Silverwood full control of selection as well as team affairs. He recruited Silverwood who seems to be out of his depth. He has presided over a red ball team where players have made promising starts to their international careers (Crawley, Pope, Burns, Sibley) and have got worse. The rotation policy of the last 12 months was his idea. Giles isn’t the only issue but he’s certainly in the middle of the mess and potentially as culpable as anyone else.

Understand some of the motivation behind "Chairman of Selectors" and agree some seem to have gone backwards...I'm not advocating he or Silverwood should keep their jobs and actually citing "we've got similar results to every time we come here" makes me cringe.

But you sorta get a little of the mitigation around how long our team has been in a test bubble (seems to have been longer than many test sides) and hasn't some rotation been around getting them out of that bubble for periods, too?

Wouldn't want just him and Silverwood doing the promised post mortem

If anyone hasn’t I suggest you have a read of Stuart Broads interview on the BBC.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/59879521

How refreshing to hear honesty from an England cricketer. Real honesty.

Bet Joe is looking to have him dropped now.

Broady expertly dissecting some of the immediate problems. Proper will to win attitude. Give him the top gig when he retires and get rid of the yes men.

Reasonable, but I'd hesitate to say expert dissection...pointing out our first innings totals haven't been good enough, the mystery "saving half our bowlers" in the first test and shoulda put them in, in the second (?) Didn't require any expertise. Fairly sure we got most of them between us.

And actually, when Root decided to have a pop at the bowling, the way and when and how he presented it was absolutely gobsmackingly wrong, but the point that we hadn't hit the right lengths often enough probably had an element of truth too.

Looks like the main threat is variable bounce so they're all going to get out cutting. Lyon 8-30.
