What made you go 'wow'?

Post by William the White » Fri Sep 28, 2012 10:06 am

Beefheart on the 'watching' thread named Gin and Tonic, Guacamole, and Orchestral music as three things that made him go 'wow. where have you been all my life?'

For my 39th birthday my wife took me to the opera for the first time. With a grumpy feeling inside I went to the Birmingham Opera House to see the Welsh National Opera's production of Verdi's Otello.

Twenty minutes in I was thinking 'Why have I waited 39 years to put this experience into my life?'. At the interval we booked for Carmen the next day...

Wow!

When I saw the picture of that weight lifter who burst his arse open...

Unreal

The The Raphael Cartoons at the V & A. The detail coupled with the enormity of them just blew me away.

Those and discovering Portuguese red wine.

Another time where this happened was when I discovered how to do a 'vlookup' on excel. It changed my life, for the better.

Gonna go for the obvious but the birth of my kids was a WOW moment.

Stepping out of a cab in midtown Manhattan and looking up at the Empire State Building.

Turning round and seeing my wife in her wedding dress.

 Great shout. Seeing all those buildings, yellow cabs and smoking sidewalks that I'd only ever seen on telly. Only topped by walking out onto the viewing platform at ESB later that night. Incredible.

My first fell race and the Athletics event I went to last month both had me scratching my head wondering why I'd never done it before

My first ever night match, walking out from the dark into the Burnden Paddock seeing the pitch all lit up. Magical for a kid.

Seeing my kids born. From the initial "That's never gonna come out of there" to a rush of emotion I've never felt since.

Watching my first post mortem. If you ever get chance, do it. It's incredible.

Venice.

I went with all the "it smells", "it's vastly expensive" tales in my mind.

I was dumbstruck.

Also, moons ago, when I first drove round a bend and saw in front of me the village of Broadway in the Costwolds. Astonished.

... & similar to Bruce, various Cathedrals, Salisbury, Wells, York, Canterbury.

Oh, & the first time I ate Hot & Sour soup !!

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

A girl taught me ballroom dance at 14. First time we charged into a corner and stepped our way out of it at speed gave me a buzz for dance that's lasted a lifetime. :)
