I think your argument comes into play - perhaps - when a person has actually been charged with something concrete... in THIS case, the police waited for Cliff Richard to be away on holiday - so there was no opportunity to interview him - and then tipped off the BBC, orchestrating a massive media presence as they went to do a search of his house.Prufrock wrote:Dunno, I think it's a really hard one. I used to think that, with these sort of allegations, the defendant shouldn't be named until after any conviction...
that's no way for a police force to conduct its business.

I don't think that's what happened at all Bish. If the papers yesterday were agreed on anything, it is that the BBC orchestrated events to suit their own agenda, leading to an official complaint form the force to the regulator.thebish wrote:I think your argument comes into play - perhaps - when a person has actually been charged with something concrete... in THIS case, the police waited for Cliff Richard to be away on holiday - so there was no opportunity to interview him - and then tipped off the BBC, orchestrating a massive media presence as they went to do a search of his house.Prufrock wrote:Dunno, I think it's a really hard one. perhaps blame on both sides - but the police DID tip off the BBC about the raid - else how would they have known to turn up?Bijou Bob wrote:I don't think that's what happened at all Bish. Tip off us an emotive phrase that suggests wring doing or an under handedness. I'm really not sure that was the case at all. The truth will out as both parties have been summoned by parliament to give evidence.

the south yourkshire police statement includes this:
the police tipped off the BBC."The force was reluctant to co-operate but felt that to do otherwise would risk losing any potential evidence, so in the interests of the investigation it was agreed that the reporter would be notified of the date of the house search in return for delaying publication of any of the facts."

Both equally to blame I feel.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Are the press/news organisations still claiming self regulation is perfectly adequate?

Trouble is, with 10 months to an election no sane politician is going to attack the nature of "the free press". So nowt will alter.

Interesting view. Certainly one to save for next time somebody comes out with the 'nothing to hide, nothing to fear' line.
