Also "blood & sand" .... what did THAT ever mean ?

God, I longed to meet a woman who'd go in a pub on her own. Then turned up at Uni to find 1,000's of the beggars.
Not sure what it means in everyday stuff, but it was the title of an old Tyrone Power film about bullfighting back in the 40's. Remember going to see it as a kid.
Based on a book by Vicente Blasco Ibánez - I believe there were several versions.

My dad also used to refer to a strange being, as in a bit of a bogey-man or a person of ill-definition when saying "who do you think I am P. Icky the Fire-Bobby?".

Actually, I used to think he said Peerky, but found that not to be quite correct.

Any other takers ?

I used to be threatened with the Sandman. I've no idea what his powers were supposed to be, but I knew I didn't want to meet him. And it was never explicitly stated, but I just knew that he lived in the airing cupboard at the end of the hallway.

Ah, the Sandman. A well known fable. He is the person who will throw sand in your eyes which makes you fall asleep.

Or Karla ... he may have been threatening you with a visit from the head of the Russian Secret Service. Now THAT would have been harsh.

Never heard of P-Icky, but a fire bobby was like a police bobby cos they both wore helmets. Police bobby from Robert (Bobby) Peel who founded them.(Also known as Peelers)

Any way, all that fades into insignificance against the ultimate threat for bad behavour: "Father Christmas is watching". I mean, that was frightening.

Christmas 1962. In December i'd done something bad (although I cannot recall what now), and on Christmas morning had crept out of bed to find Santa had delivered a sack... full of ashes. Later that morning the reindeers felt sorry for me, apparently, and I got a small sack of presents delivered. It taught me a lesson: always befriend reindeer.
