It's the utter greyness of the feckers that drives me to contemplate violence. But having had therapy, I can usually overcome it by conjuring up visions of their redder British cousins.Lord Kangana wrote:Beneath the thin veneer of respectability you've always struck me as someone with squirrelist tendencies, if I'm being honest.

In my garden the fat balls are not being touched. Usually these are devoured in spring and when the migrating birds are fattening themselves up for their long journey south. In between, nothing.
Peanuts and seeds are a good safe bet all round but try not to get ones with a high barley content. If you want to push the boat out, then blackbirds and robins like mealworms.

They are fussy beggars ... and ingrates ... these birdie things.malcd1 wrote:In my garden the fat balls are not being touched. Usually these are devoured in spring and when the migrating birds are fattening themselves up for their long journey south. In between, nothing.

As you have found certain birds simply turn their beaks up at some of the offerings and as for timing, yep ... they virtually ring your doorbell demanding food at some times of year and then beggar off and ignore you the rest of the time.
The squirrels have taken to biting through the netting holding the fat balls. They drop and crack on the patio and off the little gits run with large pieces. Survival of the fattest I guess.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

^ How's that even vaguely squirrel proof? I doubt it's old-age pensioner proof either.

Yes there is.
If you can't see any OAPs, how do we know they exist?

If an OAP falls in the woods and there is no-one around do they still break a hip?

Wife uses sunflower hearts, niger seed and general wild bird seed. She stopped putting fat balls out because they were attracting too many starlings. We have quite a lot of goldfinches, an odd greenfinch or two and dunnocks etc. We also have about a dozen pigeons or so that peck at anything that lands on the floor.

Yes. Easily. Even if you greased the pole they'd still get there. You obviously live in a squirrel free zone, that's the only explanation.Bruce Rioja wrote:Well, in three years I'm yet to se a squirrel up there, so here are the keys to your Honda Civic, SpottyLost Leopard Spot wrote:^ How's that even vaguely squirrel proof? I live next to a woods that I can assure that it is neither squirrel nor fox free - and I've seen as many foxes climbing that pole as I have squirrels.Lost Leopard Spot wrote:Yes. Easily. Re: For the birds
They must be nicking the fat balls from your neighbour's then. And if you look over your fence you'll probably see a dozen OAPs milling about too...

Re: For the birds
^^ Point not proven, no poles climbed, see?! Now then, if my pole had a clothes line attached to it then yes, I'd expect to see squirrels shimmying along it, but there isn't as I have a rotary airer, and a Brabantia one at that!

How many different Google variations on 'squirrel climb painted pole' did you try before giving in, Spotty?
