Robert I : Scotland, Bruce, Fiona, Annandale, Bannockburn, versus England, cave, spider, keep on son, King, Scotland
Jayne Macdonald: Scotland, clans, versus Campbells, Glencoe, singing, cruise ship
Jonathan Edwards: Christian, triple jumper
John Reid: Scotland, labour, politician

therefore is the connection Scotland? (but if it is, where does Jonathan Edwards fit in?)

Robert the Bruce is an historical king - so the connection is unlikely to be historical, or to do with the monarchy.
Jane McDonald is a singer - so the connection is unlikely to be singers
Jonathan Edwards is a sportsman - so it's not going to be sportsman related (unless outside of track and field).
& John Reid is a politician - so the connection won't be (UK) politicians

McDonald rather than Macdonald is relevant.
But the only thing I'm getting is McDonald's the fast food chain, and I can't see a connection to the other three.
It still might have something to do with spiders or caves, but I don't see what.

Therefore, Kemo Sabe, I'm stumped. I'll get my hoss.

I don't know. She was the one I was unsure on. She's on tv in the morning on a newsy looking programme, but I've only ever seen seconds of it.
