stand up comedy

Post by mrkint » Fri Apr 19, 2013 12:05 am

probably pissing in the wind here, but...

anyone every attempted stand-up comedy on here? if so any tips, advice?

i've got some ideas whirling that'd probably fit into a set, might be looking to do an open mic of some sort in the summer. but a) it'd be nice to practice beforehand and b) wtf man who does this shit. Any suggestions?

(idea 29354545 that hit mrkint's brain and stuck for all of 8 minutes)

An old actress friend asked me to do it ages ago.

I said no.

Any good?

Well I can't say because I've never seen you perform.

Mr Coffeymagic would be yer man on that score.

Not sure he's always stood up when being comedic though.

You should have been there tonight! There is nothing, nothing, funnier than watching shit comics at an open mic night with a Tourette's sufferer in the crowd. Oh, my days.

It was Golden! Beforehand, my concept of 'Tourettes' was the 'fcuk fcuk fcuk' Tim Howard ranting at his defence idea. My mate was the compere, and knows the girl. It was like instant, razor sharp heckling. She looked really embarassed, and was really sweet afterwards, but was so, so funny. I felt bad, but could not help it.

Thinking about it, you probably need a hook or a catchphrase.

"Boom, Boom", "It's the way I tell 'em", "It's good night from me and it's good night from him", "Yeah, but, no, but", "Just like that".

All priceless and timeless.

Looking forward to the show already.

Beat the frog at't Frog 'n Bucket is marvellous.

Nerdy studenty-types getting up full of bravado after a carrot juice and then dying a death on stage, fat middle-aged women talking about their grandma's and wondering why the young crowd isn't laughing, although once a blue moon a decent comic gets up and doesn't get booted off.

Good luck, but if you're not funny then expect the likes of me to boo you off.

Getting up to do your own stand up routine must be one of the most difficult, and is certainly one of the bravest things that anyone can do. No instrument to hide behind, no-one to blame if it goes wrong, and an audience of people - nearly all of whom think that they can do it better than you, secretly hoping you're not funny so that they can boo you off, and not a one of them with the bollocks to do what you're doing.

Get up there, Kinty. The very best of luck to you. I, for one, admire your spirit.
