111 years this week since the Pretoria Pit disaster at Westhoughton. God Bless the memory of those killed in that awful tragedy. R.I.P.

Fare thee well, Meatloaf. Bat our of Hell, one of those albums that someone always seemed to put on after midnight at parties in the early 80's...

Indeed. Wasn't there a copy in every third UK household at one point? Thing is, doesn't matter what music you raised yourself on, nobody ever grew tired of listening to it.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 8:59 amFare thee well, Meatloaf. A true original character.
Treated my girlfriend to a full rendition of Bat Out Of Hell while making tea together. She was so touched she left the room.
This tribute amused me.

Re: This weeks RIP's........
Sadly, news coming through that Bamber Gascoigne has passed away, aged 87.
Though still enjoyable, UC really hasn't been anything like the same since Paxman took over.
Paul Sinha, I find, perhaps describes Gascoigne's demeanour best as being one of "effortless erudition, making whole swathes of impenetrable knowledge seem cheerfully accessible".
RIP.

Sad News.Always uesd to enjoy University Challenge when Bamber Gascoigne ran it. He was a friendly, likeable sort who didn't make the contestants feel small for not knowing answers. In character he was almost totally the opposite of the cynical literate assassin that was Jeremy Paxman. Condolences to his family and may he Rest In Peace. No doubt he would have preferred Requiescat in Pace.

I was going to say the same but didn't want to appear stupid. What a relief it is to have a friend in you.Burnden Paddock wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 1:47 pmWorthy4England wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 1:11 pmAs a sprog, I always thought it was a made-up name. RIP
