Ref anal gland emptying, I recommend only dog owners read this: Up to now, when it occurs we've alway took him to the vets. Don't fancy the option....

I'm thinking so. Ours is a Shih-tzu and I'd never heard it before we got him. Apparently some dogs just empty themselves as part of the toilet pantomime. It's a painful process for the dog when it happens, that's why we use the vet.

Ours were bull terriers which are not small. They'd try to empty it themselves by sitting down (outside thank Gid) and pulling themsleves along with fore paws (sliding but perhaps this is what Harry meant by scooting). Usually they managed it themseves but occasionally we went to the vet. That was the only time we were subjected to the smell in a closed room. Gawd!

Our Beagle needs 'emptying' about once every 2 months. The tell tail signs are her rubbing her arse on the floor. Apparently some dogs suffer with this more than others. Some get that it that bad that the glands need to be removed.

We used to pay the vet £15 for what is a pretty quick and straightforward, although not very pleasant task of emptying her glands. Because it needs doing so often, he gladly showed us (i.e. Mrs H) how to do it, to save us the money, and we've never been back.

I hold her head (i.e. the dog's, not Mrs H's) between my legs and Mrs H dons the Marigolds and does the dirty work at the other end. Apparently the smell's awful, but I've yet to whiff it, since I breathe through my mouth throughout the whole procedure, thus avoiding any smells.

Whilst the dog objects to having fingers shoved up her backside, she recovers immediately and is right as rain straight afterwards. :)
Hope is what keeps us going.

TBH, if it were me at the messy end, I'd rather pay too, but Mrs H doesn't seem to mind.
