Britpop or S**tpop?

Post by Andy Waller » Tue Apr 08, 2014 7:00 am

According to Radio 2, it's 20 years since the height of Britpop. (No idea how you date it but never mind (that was grunge))

Was it a good or a bad thing?

Discuss.....
What a hero, What a man...... Ooooh, what a bad foul...

It was not as good as what had come before it, but what followed it was so much worse!
The above post is complete bollox/garbage/nonsense, please point this out to me at any and every occasion possible.

It was great. After a decade where folk who could gabble shite poetry at speed, twiddle knobs and work a boombox were suddenly replaced by musicians that could play.

Sure there was a lot of guff about, but the amount of new bands that kept popping up on TFI Friday and the like was really refreshing.

Echobelly, Sleeper, Cast & Shed 7 will all be on the stereo tonight as a mark of respect!

That's not really true though is it. I can assure you hip hop didn't stop in 1994, and even if you do think the likes of Noel Gallagher can 'play' it's not as though there wasn't anyone doing that pre-britpop. Same with any movement in music, some of it was good and some of it was shite.

There was some great music out around that time. Just that most of it was American.

That wouldn't be Britpop then, would it?

(The clue is in the "Brit" bit of Britpop...)

Apart from the Bluetones, Blur, Pulp, the first two Oasis albums, the opening Supergrass album and Elastica's eponymous album I struggle to think of many redeeming features of mid-90s Britpop.

Shed Seven - shit trick pony
Gene - Elbow before Elbow (ie Boring beyond anything)
Menswear - dogshit
The Divine Comedy - Give Over (not even the Father Ted theme can save them)
Ocean Colour Scene - just rubbish
Cast - lightweight dross
Suede - soft post-WierdBowiephase, vacuous crap
Dodgy - say no more
Echobelly & Sleeper - one and the same. Shit Sandwich

Now Grunge.... there was a spiritual, wholesome genre of music. :D

I'd say you missed out Ash, who were shit until that bird got drafted in, and were OK then. Pretty good live actually. Tend to agree with you on all of the above except (a) Personal thing, I know, but I think Pulp are/were absolute shite, and (b) I thought 'In it for the Money' was a very fine second album.

Was great fun at the time but no real substance and hasn't stood the test of time. Some really shit bands were in the right place at the right time. There's only wally pulp I still enjoy listening to, but they predated that scene and were much more interesting and accomplished than anything else in it I always thought. Great live too.

Yeah, Ash were never here nor there for me. They supported Nirvana. Big Deal. They're not fit to beat their eggs. You're right RE: Supergrass, that dust-bin album had its moments. That album with the translucent skulls on the cover - that was largely garbage.

GARBAGE. Now there was a solid, solid band.

Pulp never really did it for me until I saw them at Primavera about three years ago. They are a sensation live. Absolutely remarkable. I couldn't believe it. Because of that - they're dynamite.

Loved early Garbage, have their first three albums (somewhere) but lost interest on the third. Always had them down as being an American band with a Scottish singer rather than Britpop though.

Liam on the other hand just said every other band was sh*te.

Am I aloud to debate on music which was first produced before I was born?

Yes it was Butch Vig's project really, very much US influenced rather than Britpop. Saw them live with Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth and they were excellent. Shirley was properly hot as well. Last time I saw her she was playing a Terminator in the Sarah Connor TV series.

Hell yes! I'd have loved to be her Bad Boyfriend!
