US detente with Cuba

Post by Montreal Wanderer » Wed Dec 17, 2014 9:49 pm

Finally a good piece of world news. I've waited many years for this. It looks like the embargo - outdated at least since the collapse of the Soviet Union - may be ended. Canada was instrumental in bringing the two countries together.. The only downside to all this is that the cheap holidays we Canadians (and you Europeans) enjoy in Cuba may be a thing of the past. Prices will go up once economic relations are normalized and American tourists start arriving.

Us Europeans don't enjoy cheap holidays in Cuba. They screw us on the cost of flights. If they don't get you one way, they'll get you another... :-)

The Vatican was also involved.

Still unlikely that the embargo will be lifted though as the Republicans will block it

They called Obama out of touch. (I guess when your world view is centered around ideals from 50 years ago he is out of touch)

They actually had modern Chinese buses and cars when I was there four years ago. They also had American cars from the 1950s and Ladas from the 60s to the 80s.

What I find funniest about that is that the Cubans were dirt poor and outrageously exploited by the Americans before Castro took over (thats why the yanks were so pissed off about it all), yet they've managed to persuade people like our good friend a1 that somehow or other it was a land of milk and honey overflowing with the benevolent milk of human kindness that their paternalistic protectors bestowed upon them until the naughty communists spoiled it all.

I wonder if Obama will go the same way as Kennedy for doing it?
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

I'm not sure which way that photo is trying to give an answer. Is that a yes or a no?

That's why brown paper bags were invented, so that all women can get some.

yeah but

"more vegetables or eat my pet pig for my birthday present ?"

is a true story, from the 80s, i'm guessing, maybe the 90s.

if obama's gonna die i'd guess one of these types he's bin bending over for will do it rather than some cowboy gun secessionist type.

lee harvey oswald was a former communist probably read a karl marx book halfway through. regicide presidential assasination is one of them things i'd never think anyone would be favorite for. unexpected slight edge to the 'own side' maybe.

and i'd find out fidel's bank balance for a laugh too.

Doesn't this hinge on them becoming a more 'democratic' nation (Cuba, I mean...)?

which begs the question, why aren't they demanding the same of Saudi Arabia etc?
