Sadly a fairly common occurrence. Certainly several a year, though this will get more coverage due to the location. A nice hotel too. Hopefully they've gotten everyone out. It'll be busy as it's in a prime position for the fireworks display on the burj Khalifa.

Pictures look a bit beyond 'common' AT. As you say though, hopefully everybody evacuated.

There are several fires like that every year Spotty. Some of them involve eejits with bbqs and cigarettes, though you'll be pleased to hear not ecigs as they're banned :)

Unfortunately many of the worlds skyscrapers/tall buildings have combustible external cladding. The structure will essentially be non-combustible but the fire shoots up the outside along these panels. Like AT said, quite often with BBQ's or discarded cigarette starting on the balconies.

Some of these panels are thick slabs of polystyrene covered in a 2mm thick layer of external render. Fantastic thermal properties but burn like feck.
Do not trust atoms. They make up everything.
