Apparently today's the day that they've started on its demolition. :(
A real "end of an era" day. Nothing can take away the memories I have of the years from 1956/7 onwards. The Palais, The Empress,The Aspin Hall, Bakers, Crompton Way Casino, The Navada, Farnworth Monaco, Mecca Ballrooms in Bury, Sale, Manchester and Rochdale, all gone. Of them all, the Palais was the jewel in the crown for our era. What the xxxx would councillor Morris know about rock and roll? He shouldn't even be allowed to profane the Palais's name by mentioning it. At least I have the distinction of being amongst those who danced there on its last night, two years ago,as a dance hall. I'll never forget The Palais.:(

You did, Tango, and I for one hoped that what you did might have spurred someone on to do something with it, but hey ho. Everything you've said about the place is confirmed by my Mum by the way (who used to travel in on the bus from Ashton in Makerfield to go there).

Do we know what they're looking to build there or are we on for an Odeon Mk2 site?

All sorts of talk about hotels and student this and that, but only Councillor Morris has the crystal ball. Not hopeful.

From a quote on the BN site not long back...
"It will be replaced with a 150-bed hotel complete with roof bar and a 400-space car park to serve the nearby Market Place Shopping Centre."

Fabulous. Car park and hotel. Just what we needed.

Hang on a second, as much of a pity as it is, surely putting a 150 bed hotel on the site is far better economic news for the town than a derelict building?
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Which, theoretically sounds fine except I'm still looking for reasons the people to fill said hotel will particularly want to come to Bolton? Most of the decent shops have packed up or are gone: Our football club is 6 miles away in Horwich, Prestons, Whittakers, B.H.S, Woolworths, Top Shop, etc are no more, and the decent small traders can't afford the rents and have moved to Bury (which incidentally knocks us into a cocked hat as a town for shopping ). The new facade that is Newport Street has celebrated its make over with a Pawn shop and three bookmakers as central attractions. We are really going to have to come up with some staggeringly good reasons why Bolton is an attraction that will bring visitors in. On current form our local council couldn't organise an egg and spoon race but hint at business plans. Time, will no doubt tell.

I'm all on board with that, but what happens if it's a deal breaker due to costs?

Cheers Bruce. I could cry, but it wouldn't save it from demolition. I really hope they keep the name at least in whatever it becomes. Alway seemed a bit odd seing Palais de Danse (with an "s") rather than dance, but aparently Glasgow and St Ives also spelled it that way.

Here's an article that may be of interest to some of our "slightly older" regulars, or maybe your parents. I remember this very well:

It'd be odder if it was with an c. Palais and de are French and the French word for dance is danse.

Aye, I know mate, but in Bolton in 1956 we weren't too continental back then....
