Re: Cricket World Cup
Don’t disagree but we won the World Cup and then decided to focus on t20 and test cricket and abandoned the 50 over format.
It’s what happens when you do that and for example allow your test captain to selectively retire from one format and then come back to play in the World Cup games.
The brilliance we showed under Morgan has been lost but it’s primarily because the ECB and those running the show can’t see to focus on three formats to the necessary extent.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Also the Afghanistan bowlers would always be problematic with 280 on the board. The batting is their weakness once you let them get 250 plus in the sub continent with their spinners it’s very very hard…don’t care who you are. England’s bowling attack is very poor and that’s the major issue.

India knocked off this tally 2 down...even Bangldesh only lost 4. Some games you have to tell yourselves you're gonna win 'em and stop pussy-footing around could get beat.
Are they bollocks. In the shorter formats, they're a canny side.
Anyway, this is what we get when we practically abandon domestic one-day cricket in favour of a nonsense format.

Their bowling attack in India is probably better than ours, and several other so called top sides…
It’s their batting that struggles but they are getting better all the time. Far from San Marino. More like Senegal 2002.
Also agree entirely about your comments. Hardly any 50 over cricket played and domestically it barely registers. Add in that internationally it’s had no focus from England, we went undercooked, without any real prep over there with a bowling attack entirely unsuited to the conditions. It’s hardly a shock. Better players off form too. Oh and captain stokes decides to come out of retirement takes up a place then can’t play. A nonsense.

Never beaten NZ, Australia, India, Pakistan. Won a couple v West Indies and Sri Lanka. I'll promote them a little from San Marino to Albania. Honestly, I have 50 and 20 over cricket broadly in the same bucket...appalling result.

Nah sorry you are just wrong about Afghanistan. I think 6 of their players play in the IPL. For a start. Yes it’s T20 but still - you aren’t San Marino or Albania if half your side plays IPL.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 7:53 amNever beaten NZ, Australia, India, Pakistan. They can’t play home matches and aren’t on the big tour so as a notational side barely get to play those teams you mentioned. Since 2019 they’ve played 3 matches against the big test nations. 3.
It still doesn’t negate the quality of their players who are picked and paid vast sums for the IPL because they are good at short form cricket.
It’s no Netherlands or Scotland or Ireland.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Hold on. I thought our 50 overs format had gone shit because they were all playing T20? For our players it's shit, for theirs it makes half a side very good? Go figure!

Re: Cricket World Cup
Its a whole range of factors - the lack of top level 50 overs domestically means we aren't seeing players progress in the format.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 11:33 amHold on. But in terms of 50 over specific preparation.
Afghanistan played 50 over series in June - Sri Lanka, July - Bangladesh, August - Pakistan, September Asia cup - 11 competitive fixtures running into the 2 world cup warm up games (June onwards). In conditions similar to those we'd see in a world cup.
England played - a 4 match series against NZ in September in England....2 reserve matches (in effect) against Ireland. 4 genuine competitive fixtures across the season running into the world cup games - and those in English conditions. That is it. You have to go back to the previous cricket season and March for any other ODI competitive fixtures.
Now - regardless of the arguments about Afghanistan players being mainly T20 specialists - they maybe are but their bowling is outstanding - and their batting very much T20 - you don't need to look very hard at that to know that England were very likely in all sorts of trouble going into this WC because basically nobody in the ECB took it seriously at all in any way.

Re: Cricket World Cup
That outstanding bowling attack that went for 286-2 in 35 overs v India? At 8 an over?
I get the prep bit, but we aren't going to agree that it was against some world class titans. A very poor result.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Its a poor result for sure. Its just you are underestimating Afghanistan. Clearly England should not lose to them but they have players who absolutely would be in the English side if available. Should we lose? No. But its not some inconceivable result.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Mon Oct 16, 2023 12:28 pmThat outstanding bowling attack that went for 286-2 in 35 overs v India? At 8 an over?

Re: Cricket World Cup
It should be a pretty inconceivable result, but you're right, it plainly isn't. Two "batsmen" managed more than 20. I'm in favour of some sort of public humiliation.
They have won one previous WC finals match - against Scotland. Mind we have form there too.
The fact that you think some of their players would make a piss poor England team probably supports that contention as to how poor we were. I doubt any would make the 2019 team.
One of the worst performances I can recall by an England side.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Actually, I might need to recant a bit. Albania are top of their qualifying group!
Re: Cricket World Cup
They've got a good bowling attack. Not amazing but good. I don't think you'd swap it for ours, but it's close enough that they can be better on a given day (as they were).
But they're batting is pretty hopeless. One of those where they need to bat and bowl well, and us poorly, and they have a chance.
Holland beat SA yesterday, and Afghanistan putting NZ under pressure now.
It's clearly a dreadful result but it's more like City losing at home to Palace say (probably not but will happen every now and then) than say the Dog and Duck XI.
Most alarming bit was Woakes and Curran, and then how poorly we played spin on a good pitch. Going to have to shape up.

This. Worthy is in hyperbole territory!
SA losing to lowest ranked team in the tournament the Netherlands - now that was really shocking!

Re: Cricket World Cup
233-4 with 15 overs left, against a team bowled out by a set of bunnies from the Netherlands...
This really doesn't seem to be about how good (or otherwise) Afghanistan, currently sat 9th out of 10 in the table are...it's really about how good (or otherwise), we are. At the minute it has "shambles" writ large. Hope the batsmen are all in good shape...
Guess on the plus side, it is a good batting track.

Re: Cricket World Cup
Famous last words but they basically have no batting beyond 6. Need to run through them now.
