US Open

Post by Gertie » Mon Jun 19, 2006 8:21 am

I hadn't followed much of this due to having other, well thought-out and exciting, plans this weekend.

However I watched the last hour our so last night...

I really really thought Monty was going to win his first major and I was really cheering for him... But he blew it on the 18th taking 6 letting an Aussie Guy win Oglivy who looked quite sweet.

My leftie pal Phil Mickleson completely threw away a chances of 3 major titles in the row by ending up in the hospitality tent instead of the fairway. So justice was served as he completely hacked away at the last 2 holes.

Did anyone else see?

Are you coming to Hoylake to watch Commie? I can't wait - it'll be the first time I see an Open played on a course I know well.

Winged Foot can look a bit silly, but that's kind of the point of the US Open - it's nice to see an over-par leaderboard for a change.

The problem is, the USGA seem to want to humilate players by making situations where players lose a title rather than win it outright.

Looking forward to Hoylake - have seen Birkdale and Lytham dozens of times but this will be a new one. Played the muncipal across the road from it about five years ago (howling rainstorm and all).

It isn't to everyone's taste, but I don't think it is necessarily a question of 'humiliation'. It's a big part of the tradition of the US Open, and it's good to see the world's best struggling and watching them attempt to cope. Come on, a double bogey isn't that degrading!

I am indeed going to Hoylake, I've got hospitality tickets.

Don't agree with the set-up on Winged Foot. There's no way that a course should be set so that not one player is even level par after 4 days in good conditions.
