Beware the World Cup
From Computer Weekly:
Those engrossed by the World Cup are being warned about a new damaging internet worm that could attack their systems.
The W32.Worm.Zade.A, a new mass e-mailing worm that sends itself out as a themed World Cup message, has been reported by Internet Security Systems (ISS).
The worm attempts to replicate itself via infected users’ address books, which can cause e-mail traffic to spiral and crash systems.
The malware also attempts to download and execute a file from a remote server to disenable users’ anti-virus software and personal firewall software.
James Rendell, senior technology specialist at ISS, said, “We suspect that this is only the start of things to come from hackers.”
Football governing body and World Cup organiser Fifa has so far avoided any damaging attacks on the extensive network it has built for the tournament.
