Fair dinkum. As ever, this world is a game of opinions. For me he's one of the few who can marry beauty and despair perfectly just with his voice. 'Crying' being the exemplar for that, for me, tbf, tbh, IMO, pal etc etcBruce Rioja wrote:Interesting. The sound of Roy Orbison's voice has me diving for the off switch.KeyserSoze wrote:Roy Orbison

Oh absolutely, Fella. Blokes voices that I struggle to listen to include Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Rod Stewart. It's just me. Can't stand to hear them.KeyserSoze wrote:Fair dinkum. Nah man, understandable. Can imagine you could through some my way that I would gladly rip the vocal chords out of and Johnny cash does have a habit of delving into a shatner impersonation to be fair. With you on rod Stewart though.Bruce Rioja wrote:Oh absolutely, Fella. Blokes voices that I struggle to listen to include Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Rod Stewart. It's just me. The now revd Richard Coles is interviewed in my church's denominational magazine.. in it he is asked about the Communards and how it was - and he says he enjoyed it and it was well rewarded but that he wasn't really suited to it..
interviewer: in what ways weren't you suited to it?
Coles: I never really liked pop music!

The Shaggs - Philosophy Of The World.
Hmmmmm, I've never heard anything quite like it. Described variously as 'the most stunningly awful wonderful record', 'like lobotomised Trapp family singers' and 'It may stand as the worst album ever recorded.' Still, Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain both rated it very highly. Personally, I gave each track a good twenty seconds and it will never cross my ears again. There's a sample on YouTube but I recommend ear defenders.

Without asking what search got you there, it does highlight the dangers of drug taking.clapton is god wrote:The Shaggs - Philosophy Of The World.

I perceive that it might be useful at 04:00 when the neighbours aren't budging and you want to get to bed.

Not a search. They were mentioned in the Jon Ronson article on Frank Sidebottom so thought I've investigate.

Dvoraking...how can I express my utter disappointment. Even my dog has not stooped to using 'dvoraking' in any conversation she's had with me. I can only conclude that you, sir, are pissed (or American).

Re: What are you playing tonight?
I listened to the Danny Baker show today. One guest was Graham Gouldman formerly of 10cc. It was an amazing revelation.
I was aware that he had done a lot in music but hadn't fully appreciated how much. I went on to read the wiki's for him and then the others from that band. If you are of that generation, or simply interested, then try to catch it on i-player.
One item - he wrote "For Your Love" and did a demo but it was rejected. The band, later to become 10cc, were the warm up band for Top of the Pops at that time and they watched the Yardbirds come on and perform it.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Spent two hours this evening reintroducing myself to the music of Ian Dury.
My, what a pleasure that was.
