The Australian won three gold medals at the 2000 Games in Sydney and added two titles in Athens four years later.officer_dibble wrote:He's 24....wish i could retire at 24.
On a serious note, whilst understanding that he is shit hot, and by all accounts some kind of fish/human crossbreed, why is he deciding to retire so soon?
But he has barely competed since then because of injury and fatigue, and told a news conference in Sydney he had been weighing up his future for some time.

Probably not, Gertie, but I sometimes wondered if he could swim backwards and still win.
The fatigue thing: from my reading he suffered a bout of glandular fever from which he has still not recovered (do you ever fully recover from this affliction?).
He's a sportsman, albeit a very good one in his field (and if anyone says a swimming pool is not a field I'll tweak your nose), but the local paper this morning might well have been an Ian Thorpe special edition cum obituary. Bloody hell. I applaud his decision, he's done just about everything a swimmer can do and he's young enough to carve out a career outside competition. He's not short of the odd quid or two either.
