Re: The athletics/running thread
just watched the BBC's "Trust Me I'm a Doctor" (whilst lifting some weights!)
new research suggests - interestingly - that MEN burn more fat (about 10%) if they exercise on an empty stomach whilst WOMEN burn more fat (about 20%) if they exercise after eating.
so - those of you what are blokes have got this whole park run THEN breakfast exactly the right way round... any ladies you spot doing the same thing are getting it badly wrong!

I chiefly agree with it's findings - running on treamills is as boring as shite, kids you on into thinking you're going faster than you are, and due to lack of veriation leads to repetitive strain injuries, which in my particular case manifest themselves as lower back pains (as correctly diagnosed by Gary the Enfield - despite him not being a fecking Doctor)
What it doesn't address though is how much more energy it takes to propel yourself forward off of hard surfaces rather than by simply bringing one foot back in front of the other.
Also, when I've ran outside I feel superb at the end of it, whereas when I've ran in the gym it just feels like I've fulfilled some or other obligation to myself.
The treadmill forces you to run in a straight line. If you have a weak point (like my I.T. band or Bruce's back) it can be exacerbated by the lack of variety. Outside you are up and down hills, kerbs and dodging pedestrians and street furniture. Much better for you. But I'm not a doctor or even a fitness coach so what do I know.

Has it worked then, or you got to see him again? A good osteopath can make you feel a foot taller when you come out of treatment but I guess that might be pushing it a bit for you!Burnden Paddock wrote:Jarred back was the diagnosis. Re: The athletics/running thread
He told me it should take 3-4 sessions. I'm back there on Tuesday. I couldn't stand up straight (fnarrr) this morning. Had to phone Mrs BP downstairs to help me. Which was an improvement on yesterday, when she had to dress me!Harry Genshaw wrote:Has it worked then, or you got to see him again? Re: The athletics/running thread
Well last time I came up the panic fannies cancelled it!
Hope to be back up soon.
Yesterday was another 90km cycle. First 2 hours were okay but the second half of the ride I was literally wet through and freezing. Still, more miles under the belt.....

Agreed on the weather. I did a dreadful, turgid 17 miles over Rivington and Belmont yesterday. God it were perishing. Took me the rest of the day to get warm again! Sounds like the training is going well G

On Saturday I made that schoolboy-est of schoolboy errors - looking out from a centrally heated bedroom and thinking 'yeah, you'll be fine in just a t-shirt and shorts this morning'. Oh dear!Harry Genshaw wrote: Agreed on the weather. I did a dreadful, turgid 17 miles over Rivington and Belmont yesterday. God it were perishing. Took me the rest of the day to get warm again!

You'll not do that again! I set off with a jacket and then slipped into a barb wire fence only 3 miles in. New jacket has 2 big tears in it now. Just enough room for the wind and rain to get inBruce Rioja wrote:On Saturday I made that schoolboy-est of schoolboy errors - looking out from a centrally heated bedroom and thinking 'yeah, you'll be fine in just a t-shirt and shorts this morning'. Re: The athletics/running thread
Last night, for a bit of 'fun' I did a time trial with my swim group.
As there were 12 of us taking part (2 at a time in a dedicated swim lane) I had a warm up whilst waiting for my turn.
28 lengths later it was my go.
I managed 9.07 although I could have been quicker. Nice consistent pace though and happy with that as a base to build on.
