A time I remember so well. A time of, if not arrogance then certainly one of extreme confidence. Things like Exeter taking the lead at our place and celebrating like they'd won summat being met with a collective make-the-most-of-it Paddock shrug (BWFC 4 Exeter 1) and going into the last 10 or 15 minutes at home to Chester with the score at 0-0 knowing that there was only going to be one outcome (BWFC 5 Chester 0). Wonderful days. Thanks, Bruce. :)
Got a bit nervy towards the end though, Stoke game and Preston particularly.
After what we saw at Hull nothing was going to stop us. ;)

That 'We are goin' up' chant is still ringing in my ears from the end of the Stoke game. Whole stadium. Even the Manny Road. Electric.

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

I thought the new shape looked good yesterday and we rarely looked out of control of the match barring the first ten minutes of the second half. Spearing, Thorpe and Vela played really well (Vela had fantastic energy and seems to be a changed man these last 2 games) and the back four coped with almost everything, bar 2 careless mistakes from Wilson. Oldham changed their shape early doors to try and mark Spearing out of the game, but he never looked troubled and ran the show. Bizarrely I thought, Ameobi was far better in a defensive role than an offensive one. He can manoeuvre himself into good positions at times going forward but seems to have no idea what to do with the ball once he gets within sniffing distance of the box.

Great to see Deryck get onto the park and Clough finally break his recent duck. I still don't think we have played particularly well yet, but yesterday was a great improvement on what we've seen so far.

The only downside for me were a few missed chances and Proctor, whose cameo performance was yet again, nothing short of awful.

But

Calling Vela lazy - hang your head fella.

I'd be surprised if sny outfield player covered half the distance he did today. He's clearly been told to play a new role by Parky and he's reaping the benefits. End product missing a bit - more mcateer blade covering than nolan goalscoring imo.

The Spearing/Beevers/Wheater axis was mom though. Well worth that I thought.
Quite.. Vela looks excellent when he covers the ground and gets around the pitch with a bit more freedom and vigour. He was very good first half.

Spearing was 8/10 throughout and Beevers continues to look like our best signing in ages.

Clough ran them ragged fist half, but worryingly faded in the 2nd before his goal. Not sure if he still has fitness issues, or if it's just inexperience.

Madine worked hard, but is still too limited for me to be effective. That passback of a shot epitomised him.

Apart from a couple of 10 min spells midway through the 1st half and start of the 2nd, I thought we dominated and should have scored more than we did. Oldham look like relegation fodder.

Final note. I usually quite like WIlson. He just defends the back post properly and takes up good defensive positions, but he got skinned a couple of times quite easily and did nothing to support Ameobi. First half Ameobi quite cleverly dragged people inside with a little saunter a couple of times, leaving a huge path down the flank, but Wilson didn't look interested in getting up there. We'll always lack width when he plays

It was very much a 4-3-3, although it was quite fluid

Semantics but I would call it a 4-2-3-1.

Thorpe and Spearing played in front of the back four. Vela further forward.

It looked absolutely nowt like the previous variation of that system, so still saying a 433. But again, it matters not, as the players played well in their positions. On the most part.

Interesting! Thanks all. The starting formation is just that: a starting formation, and unless we're playing table football players should move. That said, it does give a strong indication of the "resting" shape, and they will generally default back to it, notably for opposition goal kicks and centres.

Madine covered so much ground that he looked like 2 men. What do you think of that, Bruce? Eh? Eh?

It's good to see Howard doing well for us! Am I right in thinking that Thorpe and Ameobi are out of contract the end of the season? Providing all goes well, w should be able to pick them up on a free Or cheap compo depending on age!

Proper goalmouth scramble for the second goal. Shit shots, shit clearances, legs everywhere. Love it.

I believe all our deadline-day loanees bar Keshi Anderson are out of contract in summer. As are about a dozen of our first-team squad members including Wilson, Buxton, Wheater, Dervite, Moxey, Spearing, Trotter, Davies, Clayton and Madine (list here, though it needs updating - Vela has signed until 2019).

Well, he does tend to miss as many as David Reeves and David N'Gog all rolled into one, so you may be on to something there, Boris ;)
