I agree there should be an expectancy of quality at University but this should be whether you pay fees or not. In socialist UK is may be that some university education is free to the individual and funded by the taxpayer but there is still a cost. One might expect greater quality if one paid more or went to a more prestigious school. However, one has to study diligently to do well and surely one cannot enter a program with a guarantee of a certain result after three years.BWFC_Insane wrote:When you are paying directly for something, the expectancy of quality and then outcomes tends to rise.TANGODANCER wrote:My (obviously wrong) understanding about schools and universities was that they gave folk the opportunity to study and then advance and study more with a view to bettering your education and persuading some employer from Asda to MI6 to give you a job by demonstrating you had taken it all in and were worth the effort because you would do the job better than the next man. The opportunities for study were there, the studying and learning up to you. Course, that was in the days when people had jobs as opposed to "glittering careers". Ah, well, times change I suppose and Bolton Tech has been hardcore for a few years now....

No. But I'm just saying you can't directly compare it to a time when a fraction went to Uni (and didn't pay directly for it) and a degree from Oxbridge was a virtual guarantee of a highly paid professional job after.TANGODANCER wrote:So, you think the levels of understanding and learning are automatically equal in everyone and education is bought with guarantees? I wonder how many students never get beyond developing a liking for vodka and don't attain glittering careers? Can all that be blamed on teachers and teaching levels? ....BWFC_Insane wrote:When you are paying directly for something, the expectancy of quality and then outcomes tends to rise.TANGODANCER wrote:My (obviously wrong) understanding about schools and universities was that they gave folk the opportunity to study and then advance and study more with a view to bettering your education and persuading some employer from Asda to MI6 to give you a job by demonstrating you had taken it all in and were worth the effort because you would do the job better than the next man. Universities like Oxford and Cambridge rely primarily on their research and reputation. Their teaching quality may be fairly mixed. But because they take the brightest academically anyway, it matters less overall to them.
I mean with people paying vast sums for their degree level education now, you can't directly compare it to the situation 40 years previously. I don't support the claim from the student. I do think poor teaching is subject to complaint now, especially with the fee introduction. But it certainly hasn't hampered them to the extent they claim.
Re: General Chit Chat
The whining git in question went 15 years ago before the massive fees. You'd think there'd be some element of independent learning with a guy bright enough to get to Oxford. It's not like me spoon feeding Year 7s.

I've no idea if CBC provide a TV catch up service, Monty, but BBC iPlayer is a little more sophisticated than that.Montreal Wanderer wrote:"BBC iPlayer only works in the UK" which has saved me 29 minutes of my life....Enoch wrote:A nice touch 29 minutes in, I thought.

Just opened that link and was a tad concerned to find the BN's "Most popular" was some CCTV footage of three men abducting a woman.Bruce Rioja wrote:Jonny Fow - as festive, charitable and hospitable as ever!

Anyway, I've just had an exchange with a bloke with the most peculiar of names - a Mr Andrew Dullard, who signs documents 'A Dullard'. I thought he was taking the piss at first.
