What will we need when we're in the Championship next season?

What will we need when we're in the Championship next season?

Post by Hoboh » Wed Apr 05, 2017 10:34 am

Being I cannot watch us live (well not yet anyway) what do we need to compete in the Championship next season and will promotion lift the 'special needs' we are under?
Happy days are here again.

Whatever division we're in, we'll need to sign players. As per the Contract Expiry thread, the only blokes on the pay-roll by July are Howard, Alnwick, Beevers, Derik, Pratley, Chris Taylor, Proctor, Wilkinson, Amos and Vela (the latter two to June 2019, the others to June 2018).

Lets just get there first.

I think IF we go up, next season will be very very difficult. The gap is large. And we once again have to build an entire squad, or re-sign a lot of players - probably a mix of the two. But can't worry about that now.

You really expect us to lose all our remaining games?
Seriously?
We will finish second at worst, we maybe even Champions yet.

With apologies to Hoboh, I've started a poll-thread which may help frame the conversation by deciding whom to keep and whom to chop. With 16 first-teamers out of contract, that's probably the first decision to be made – whether or not promotion is achieved.

Oh don't worry about that 8)

Yours is specific in relation to re-signing mine a bit more general.

Expect? No. However we have seen situations like this in football fall apart. Do I expect it to happen? Nah. But as Parky says until we are over the line we aren't over it.

Well he would say that wouldn't he?

As far as I'm concerned promotion is done and dusted, the amount of away days just makes wining the dammed thing harder.

Only marginally. We've got the best away record in the division, and playing away seems to suit our 3-5-2, which isn't quite so effective against Macron bus-parkers.

F*cking told you all.

Next year depends a lot on what PP can do in the transfer market at the top end of the pitch. Defence, assuming we keep them and find a RB, is top half Champo IMO.

Think that is getting a bit carried away. There is a big quality gap. There is extra pace and movement in the championship. There are a number of games this season where we've conceded enough chances that a side with a more deadly striker (as many champ sides will have) would have scored a couple and won easily. Chesterfield game as an example....better striker and they'd have won.

Generally I agree our back line isn't half bad and efforts mainly need to look at midfield and up front. Though we don't own a proper full back so would need to keep AT and as you say buy a decent right back (sorry Lawrie).

We need a 20 goal a season striker. Sam said so.

We need some additional defenders

We also need that midfield maestro/playmaker we've been looking for, for 100 years. (Certainly someone as well as Morais)

If we do go up. Reckon Mark Davies will be getting a short term deal.

I'd be ok to keep Mavies (actually reasonably happy to), but it has to be related to his appearances for me (rather than just "time")

Is he back in training yet? Not heard a thing about him mentioned.

Marc Iles said he has been around the club, but I think a long way off normal training, think still limping around a bit.

Iles also hinted that Davies might have to call time on his career at this point referencing Stuart Holden and "might have a decision to make in the summer".

I'd be amazed if he was offered a deal. Amazed. I suspect IF he wants to carry on playing the club might let him train over the summer and possibly if fit enough give him a week by week contract to prove his fitness. I suspect that is as far as it would go if anything.
