That's because you're from a foreign era. :)

Crewe away as a youth, chippy nr the ground, my first ever experience of being met with that look like id just shat on the counter upon ordering a Chip Muffin!

a look i would later see again again in any chippy outside of BL8!
BL9 too. It's pretty common in Bury from when I went college/worked there.

I still remember a discussion a while back when someone calling it a Chip Muffin, said "Barm" sounded posh

Then again, I think they call it a tea-cake in some places!

I know...but in parts of Yorkshire a tea-cake is just a bread roll. They call what most of us call tea-cakes, currant tea-cakes.

This can cause a lot of confusion when they ask for chip tea-cakes outside of Yorkshire :D.

PP, BN: “It is a bit strange. We can play the third-year scholars but can’t play anyone who is a first year pro because as soon as they step foot on the pitch they count as one of our 23 going forward [under the embargo]. Once again it’s a restriction which is a shame for those young players who we’d like to have given time to. It’s going over old ground, because we know the rules.”

Third-year scholars: Harry Brockbank, Jack Earing, Cole Lonsdale, Ryan White
Young pros: Jake Turner, Alex Perry, Jeff King, Conor Hall

Rules are made to be broken. But only after Aug 31st as we likely need to sign a Vela replacement now.

Given that some of the embargo-lifting is out of our hands, and that it's taken a fkn aeon already, I don't think we'll risk "wasting" a place on a young pro. Notable that Parky cited the squad-size restriction last week when dropping interest in Alex Bruce. We're already a bit light in midfield even if Vela skips rather than hops out of the specialist's; if he's expected to be out for say six weeks, we may end up having to make an actuarial decision on the likelihood of the embargo going. In other words: do we "exclude" Vela from the 23-man squad, expecting to have restrictions lifted by the time he's back? Very difficult decision, when the alternative is frankly going possibly suicidally light in midfield.

Have a feeling the Vela injury is a bad one. Suspect months or season long as opposed to weeks. Only evidence I have for this is the club have stayed quiet on it. Which in my experience usually means something that requires expert opinion - and those are usually bad.

Yeah I think you are right. Seeing a specialist isnt he, will be a good chunk of the season at least if its ligamementa.

I suppose what i was hypothising was,
We sign a vela replacement. He goes into this so called 23 man squad. We then hit Sept 1st and have a Carabayo Cup game, then pick some of the first year scholars. So what? Can they fine us? Dock points? It is total bollocks.

Well I guess your first 23 are registered as first team players. Then after that if you play anyone else they'd count as unregistered. The penalties for that are severe. So yeah, I don't think flouting the rules is an option.

What is a shame, and a disgrace, with these rules, IMHO, is that Jeff King had a good pre-season by all accounts. He's a midfield player, who gets around the pitch. One might say a Vela type. Tonight would be the perfect opportunity to give him a game. He might do well, and then we might not need a Vela replacement externally. So we'd be saving money, being more sustainable and promoting one of our own. But the league rules make that too risky. So we can't. Its a nonsense.

Yep it's f*cking ridiculous. No problem with limiting squad places to stop financially unsound clubs spaffing money away. Clearly should exclude U21s/players who spent say 3 years at a club between 15-21.

It disincentivises the sort of thing that would make us more sound!
